Rexton-Garnet

By Linda Livermore 595-7283

All signs are pointing to spring, and we're ready. The path to the clothesline is just about devoid of snow, the plastic is coming off the windows, and the paint chip collection is being narrowed down to a few great choices.

The Easter cantata, sung by members of the various churches in the area, will perform Sunday, March 25, at 7 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church on M-117, north of Engadine.

After a week's worth of rest and relaxation, Mary Ellen Stephenson returned home from downstate, accompanied by her daughter, Mary Jane Cook. While here, Mary Jane lent a hand at the Bay View Restaurant in Epoufette, which is operated by her brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Cheryl Stephenson.

Congratulations to Diane Reinhold on the arrival of her new grandson, Zachariah. Diane is spending time getting acquainted with him before heading north.

Richard Retaski, a former Engadine High School teacher who taught during my high school years, passed away last week upon the return trip to his home in Marquette following a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Hawaii with his wife, Ann. He will be remembered by this student for his love of conservation, and his great ability to pass on the importance of the subject to his classes. He also taught many eager 16-year-olds their first driving skills, some of which I really struggled to master, especially the stick shift. Condolences to his family from the Class of 1963.

Condolences to Tammy Darknell on the passing of her dad.

A benefit for the Rick Rooney family, who lost most of their possessions in a house fire Sunday, March 11, will be Friday, March 23, at 5 p.m. at the Rexton Mennonite Church hall. This donation meal will be a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Guests are welcome to support the family.

Sporting tans are most members of the Maison family, who spent the past week in sunny Florida with an early spring break. The excitement for the first plane ride was almost enough of a vacation for the youngest Maison, Brad.

Get well wishes for the many folks fighting the dreaded flu, including my sister-in-law, Martha Sheppard, who had a hospital stay.

Happy birthday wishes to Megan Derusha March 18, Hunter Varty, Howard Hood, and Engadine correspondent Julie Freeman March 19, our very own "welcome to the neighborhood lady," Mary Ellen Stephenson, along with Bill Hood March 21, and Terry Gouza March 24.

Anniversary wishes to Wayne and Brandy Bigelow and Jim and Doris Pappineau March 23.
