Cedarville's John Scherer Inducted Into Medical Society

John R. Scherer John R. Scherer John R. Scherer, a 1999 Cedarville High School graduate, was inducted into the Zeta chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society in February at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York.

Alpha Omega Alpha, the only national honor medical society in the world, promotes scholarship and research in medical schools.

Mr. Scherer is to be graduated with distinction in research on colon cancer screening from University of Rochester May 18. While he was at the university, he conducted research on multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer. He presented his research at several national conferences including the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Academy of Physicians in the cities of Miami, Florida, San Diego, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada. He received honors in his third-year clerkships in medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, neurology, and surgery. He has been a volunteer tutor to elementary school children, and has been a volunteer at the student-run Wellness Center in Rochester.

In June, he will begin an internal medicine residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. He plans to specialize in gasteroenterology.

He is the son of Dr. John and Mary Scherer of Cedarville and the grandson of Charlotte and Ed Hammersmith of Norwalk, Ohio, the late Isabel P. Scherer, and the late Dr. Ross W. Dobbs.

During undergraduate studies at Central Michigan University, Mr. Scherer was president of the premedical society, joined the Sigma Tau Gamma National fraternity, and wrote his honors thesis on Huntington's disease. He was graduated with honors and a bachelor's degree Magna Cum Laude in the Honors Program in 2003, with a dual major in biology and neurosciences.

Mr. Scherer was graduated from high school as the valedictorian, was a member of the National Honor Society, tutored students, and received an academic all-state award.
