Mackinac Straits Hospital To Offer Pulmonary Rehab
      Two new pulmonary care services are available at Mackinac Straits Hospital, which is partnering with Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey to offer a pulmonary rehabilitation program in June and a pulmonary outreach clinic in July. The St. Ignace programs eliminate travel to Petoskey or Marquette.

Mackinac Island Lilac Festival Begins Friday
      The 58th Mackinac Island Lilac Festival will start this Friday, June 8, and will continue through the festival's finale, the Lilac Festival Grand Parade Sunday, June 17. This year's festival theme is stories and poems from the golden age of fairy tales, and the festival and island businesses will reflect that theme.

Kids Fishing Day Is June 9
      "When you get a four- or fiveyear old with a fish in a bucket, it's really a lot of fun," said organizer Louie Colegrove in anticipation of the 11th Annual Kids Fishing Day, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Castle Rock Ponds on the Hiawatha National Forest. No fishing license is required.

Episcopal Diocese Bishop James Kelsey Dies in M-28 Car Crash
      Episcopal Bishop James Kelsey of Marquette and Michael Wiita of Lake Linden were killed in a threecar accident on M-28, two miles east of Shingleton near Seney Sunday afternoon, June 3. The Right Reverend Kelsey was the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan, which covers the Upper Peninsula.

      Les Cheneaux Community Schools Board of Education will consider $199,120 in proposed cuts Wednesday night, June 6, as trustees try to knock down the $190,000 deficit projected for next school year. The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the school library.

Survey Results Call for More Cultural Activities
Pickford
      Pickford is a small, yet growing community where residents say they enjoy the local services, small businesses, sense of community, and open spaces. According to the Pickford Citizen Input survey, however, residents also want more cultural activities, better cellular telephone and Internet service, and more senior citizen housing and services.

Highlights of Pickford Input Survey
      Pickford Planning Commission sent 270 surveys out to randomly selected registered voters March 21. The survey had a 30% response rate, which is considered a healthy response. Results were compiled by commissioners and the Pickford High School civics class taught by Larry Warner and were presented at a May 15 community meeting.
