(Photograph courtesy of Gary Dudeck) Thirty boats participated in the second annual DeTour "X" Atlantic Salmon Derby Saturday, June 2, with Team Big Water Tackle of Au Sable taking two top prizes. The fishing was a little slower than it had been in the days leading up to the derby, organizers reported, but more than half of the participating boats delivered Atlantic salmon in coolers to the weigh-in ceremony.
The derby participants raised more than $500 toward the support of the DeTour fish cleaning station, $225 through entrance fees and the remainder in food donations and raffle proceeds. The money will be earmarked for improvements to the station and new equipment.
Thirty-five salmon were weighed in.
First place went to Team Big Water Tackle of Au Sable, with a fish weighing in at 9.28 pounds, and the team was awarded $471. The second place prize of $255 went to Norm Perkins, of Cedarville, with a fish of 9.06 pounds. The third place $127 prize went to Norm Perkins, with a fish of 8.93 pounds.
The winner in total fish weight went to Team Big Water Tackle with five fish weighing in at 32.73 pounds, earning $446. Only three pounds separated the top teams in the total weight prize.
Both of the winning teams donated $50 of their prizes toward the cleaning station.
Team Big Water was made up of team captain George Gerard of Au Sable, and the brothers Terry, Todd, Troy, and Ty Wortley, all of Black River.
The Cedarville team consisted of Norm Perkins and his deckhands on the Les Cheneaux Islands Charter boat Sea Hawk.
