Kent Smith
Kent E. Smith, 92, of St. Ignace was a U.S. Army veteran and construction worker. He died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Marquette General Hospital, following a lingering illness.
Mr. Smith was born October 2, 1914, in Onaway to Cecil and Anna (nee Trerice) Smith.
He spent 20 years serving his country in the U.S. Army, and retired as a Specialist Fifth Class from Company C, 62nd Engineer Battalion. He had served in Europe, Philippine Islands, China, Japan, Korea, and nine stations in the U.S.
After returning to St. Ignace, Mr. Smith worked in construction for Alpine Construction, was an airport manager, and was the custodian of the United Methodist Church, where he was a member.
He married his wife, Kiyomi, in Japan July 3, 1954. She passed away January 22, 1981.
Mr. Smith was a life member of the VFW.
He is survived by three children and their families, Robin and Lila Smith of Marquette, Daniel Smith of St. Ignace, Kikumi Smith of Marquette; four brothers and their families, Ardin and Rosalie Smith of Iron Mountain, Lee and Bonnie Smith of Ithaca, Vernon and Pat Smith of Houghton Lake, and Norman and Nancy Smith of St. Ignace; two sisters and their families, Marion and Jack Fenlon of St. Ignace and Dorothy Berson of Florida; grandchildren and their families, Katrina Ann, Luke, Josh, Ron; and three great-grandchildren, Morgan, Josie, and Makenna.
Friends may call at the United Methodist Church Wednesday, July 18, from noon until at 2 p.m., when a service will be held. The Reverend James Balfour will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Josh Malarney, Josh Burnside, Luke Alexander, Mike Lehto, Joe Prout, and Johnny Smith. The St. Ignace VFW Post will serve as Honor Guard.
Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace is assisting the family with arrangements.
