Brevort
Front porch visitors this week were Jack Gearing and an old friend, Bill Triner, from Massillon, Ohio. Sally Conklin and I enjoyed the front porch.
Charlie and Pam Movalson and their daughter, Chrissy, were at their cottage on Lake Michigan this weekend. It was good to go fishing, but the fishing was not good.
About that Gustafson family pontoon ride last week: Ernie Gustafson had forgot the keys to the boat, so Sharon Smith took the emergency oars and pushed the boat out of they way of other watercraft, and they just floated around the launch site.
That's why an extended tour is being looking forward to in the future.
Mary Carney is busy with visiting grandchildren this week, Katelyn and Brett, from Remus. Grandma is keeping them busy. Katelyn is taking a nature study course from MSU Extension and Brett is doing a study in garage painting.
Mr. Carney has built a greenhouse between the house and the garage. There are large numbers of butterflies in the butterfly garden in Mr. and Mrs. Carney's yard.
Norm Dyer has been visiting his parents, Jim and Ann Dyer, these past two weeks. Lee Dyer flew home from Phoenix, Arizona, for a few days. Norm will drive to Phoenix later this week.
Dot Glashaw participated in the 50th anniversary of the Mackinac Bridge parade Saturday. She was one of many Jewels of the North Red Hat Society members on a float.
Mark Spencer, the elder, set a live trap in Dot's garden, hoping to catch the woodchuck that is eating her hostas.
Mike, Lara, Kristie, and Morgan Gustafson hosted yet another barbecue for neighbors, friends, and relatives on Saturday evening at their home east of the village. Fred Jasmund made a hit with his barbecue prowess, but his chef's apron was an even bigger hit. So unique and surprising.
Don and Beverly Liggett of Hamburg visited the area this past weekend and were guests at the Gustafson party.
Brian and Jeannie Rose have added a new cook to their staff in Brevort. Chris Gillespie is from Gould City and a graduate of the culinary school in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Brevort walkers in the Relay for Life were Sharon Smith, Carol Faye Watson, Pega Kennedy, Joyce Gustafson, and Gail Lamoreaux. Ms. Watson, Ms. Gustafson, and Ms. Lamoreaux walked the survivor lap.
Kathy Reid's sister, Becky, and her fiancé, Terry, of Traverse City were visitors at Kathy and Bob's home on Monday.
Happy Birthday to Zach Movalson August 3, Don Gustafson August 5, Joe Chalmers August 6, and Dave Movalson Jr. August 8. Happy anniversary to Willie and Donna LaLonde August 1.
Get well wishes to Rosalie Robinson and to Chrissy Movalson.
A memorial service for Lee Quigley will be held Thursday, August 2, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort. Pastor Tari Stage-Harvey and the Reverend Herb Agee will officiate.
Lorie and Joe Stewart joined Dave, Dave Jr., and me at Sand Bay Saturday evening for the great fireworks display.
On Tuesday of last week, smoke was sighted east of Brevort. Marilee Barthelemy and her son, Michael, drove to the site of the smoke. They spotted four young people standing beside US-2. It was determined that the four had driven their Jeep Cherokee off the pipeline into some shifty dune sand, and got stuck.
While trying to back out of a bad situation, the vehicle's manifold got very hot, and the Jeep caught fire.
The St. Ignace Fire Department responded in a timely fashion, but had to park the fire engine along the park road. The firemen donned their water packs and walked into the burning vehicle and put out the fire. In the meantime, another fire call came in from east of Moran off M-123.
Michael Barthelemy had his four-wheeler, as did his friend, Jimmy Campbell. They gave the firefighters rides out to the camp road to where their trucks were parked along with the firetruck. Once the six firefighters had been transferred, they were off to fight another fire.
Erin Barthelemy spent the weekend at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, participating in a cheerleading competition.
The Barthelemys hosted a family cookout at their home on Fishermen's Drive Sunday afternoon. Jody and Mike Gustafson, Jody's mother, Mary Lou and her husband, Graton, of Palm Harbor, Florida, Lee and Pam Sikes from near Orlando, Florida, Chuck and Damian Sikes of Sarasota, Florida, Robbie and Jennifer Gustafson and family, Mike and Yvette Gustafson and family, Mimi and Jim Gustafson, Paul and Jill Gustafson, and Violet Gustafson, all of St. Ignace, were guests.
Eric, Marilee, Michael, and Tyler Barthelemy all attended the Fisherman's Memorial dedication in St. Ignace this weekend. Marilee's grandfather, Alvin Gustafson, and uncle, Gary Gustafson, lost their lives while raising their nets off the shore of Lake Michigan near Brevort in 1977. Their names, with others who were claimed by the deep waters of the local area while fishing, are inscribed on the monument.
