DeTour Area
What can be more beautiful than the picture-perfect weather we have been having? Of course: the team of Budweiser Clydesdale horses that visited Cedarville last week. It was certainly a thrill to see them march down M-134.
This well-groomed team of horses was in northern Michigan to participate in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Mackinac Bridge. It was a treat for all to view these gorgeous animals, and also to see the Dalmatian dog sitting atop the wagon with the drivers.
For all avid fishermen, it is not too late to take part in the Annual Salmon Derby in DeTour. Registration is being held at North Country Sports. To date, there are 120 registrants. The derby ends Saturday, August 4, at 3 p.m.
In the evening, the Boy Scouts will serve a whitefish dinner. Awards will be presented after dinner. For more information, contact North Country Sports at (906) 297-6461.
Linda and Alex Fisher welcomed into their home Keike and Clause Beckmann with their daughter, Neeske. Neeske, an exchange student, lived with the Fishers while attending DeTour High School for one year.
The Beckmanns reside in Hidleshiem, a town in northern Germany. The family will be guests of the Fishers until Thursday, when they plan to tour the West Coast for three weeks.
While here, they enjoyed visiting the beach, as they are not close to big lakes where they live. They enjoyed a whitefish dinner. They plan to visit the Soo Locks and other places of interest. There will be a big family dinner at the Fishers before their departure this week. We wish them a safe journey.
Saturday, August 4, will be the second of the concerts at the marina. Music will be provided by our own popular band, The Mainsteet Band, led by Gary VanAlstine.
This concert is slated as a benefit concert and any donations received will be presented to the Eastern Upper Peninsula Fine Arts Council (EUPFAC) to be put toward funds for the newly acquired Cultural Center and Performance Hall, formerly Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeTour.
Rehearsals are gearing up for the performance of "Good Help is Hard to Murder." Performances are scheduled for Friday, August 17, and Saturday, August 18, with a matinee Sunday, August 19.
There will be a special performance Thursday, August 16, for Red Hat groups and the press. One of the characters in the play is Socrates the parrot.
Persons attending the play will have a chance to guess the identity behind the voice of the parrot, and will be eligible to win prizes donated by area artists and merchants. As of this writing, I have no clue as to whether the voice of Socrates is a man or a woman.
Food for thought: As people grow older, one of the things that makes them happy about putting on old clothes is the fact that they can.
