An overwhelming show of support raised $6,270 for cancer research at the first Jim Bohn Bike and Hike Sunday, July 8, far surpassing organizers' goal of $2,000.

Since stormy weather delayed the morning start of the bicycle ride, run, and hike from Islander Bar in Hessel to Point Brulee and back again, the event was rescheduled for the afternoon. Forty-two people registered to participate in the event, named for Jim Bohn of Cedarville, who passed away as a result of cancer at age 63 almost a year ago.

The event was organized by Les Cheneaux summer resident Jess Fusco and Ashley Overlock, an employee of the Islander Bar, which is owned by Mr. Bohn's son, Greg. Both were pleased with the turn-out in spite of the weather, and the amount of donations, and they are planning another Bike and Hike for Sunday, July 6, 2008.

Jim Bohn's three sons, Greg, Jason, and Curt, all participated in the event in various capacities. His wife, Nancy, and several family members and friends also assisted with the event or participated.

Participants could ride a bicycle along a 10-mile course, or run and walk five or 10 miles.

Donations can be made toward next year's event at www.firstgiving. com/jimbohnbikeandhike, or by sending checks payable to Cancer Research Foundation, Attention: Event Donations, P.O. Box 50226, Henderson, Nevada 89016-0226.
