Cars have had high profile symbolic roles in some of Michigan's most notable political campaigns. In the 1948 campaign that launched Democratic Governor G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams toward an unprecedented six terms, it was the battered gray DeSoto convertible driven on the trail by his wife, Nancy, former driver for the Red Cross Motor Corps.

Mackinac Island
It was a magnificent sight as a radiant, star-filled sky suddenly burst into a beautiful fireworks display as folks lined the boardwalk on Lakeshore Drive. It was a gorgeous summer night on Mackinac, Saturday, July 28. What made the evening even more perfect was the full moon shining down on the Straits of Mackinac. In the distance, both Mackinaw City and St.

The pages on the calendar seem to be turning over rather rapidly, but there is still a lot of summertime living left. The fishermen who placed in the annual Salmon Derby, which ended Saturday, August 4, were very happy.       An e-mail I received recently from a faithful reader states: "Visit your area several times a year, and read your column in the newspaper. The poppies across from the hardware are beautiful. Several places in town have wonderful displays of beauty. Think the rock garden next to laundromat is a nice addition to the town...

What a great celebration for Mighty Mac this past weekend, with a crowded town. The fireworks were just spectacular, especially on the boulevard, where my daughter, Diane, and I landed with the Matelski family around the nicest campfire. Everyone had a wonderful visit, but it was the first time we ever saw a traffic jam on the boulevard. Lots of good memories.

The top local news story is the wildfire north of Newberry. At the time I'm writing this, it was announced that 14,300 acres have been consumed by the fire, with no injuries reported or structures burned. Many people have donated to the Red Cross, set up at Four Mile Corner, just north of the town of Newberry.
