The pages on the calendar seem to be turning over rather rapidly, but there is still a lot of summertime living left.

The fishermen who placed in the annual Salmon Derby, which ended Saturday, August 4, were very happy. Of the 132 entrants, the top 10 winners and catch weights were: Roger Scales from Pickford, 20.0785 pounds, $1,500; Trevor Barnes of Burlington, 20.12 pounds, $700; Mr. Barnes also took third place with 18.955 pounds, $400. Recipients of prizes donated by area business are Bob Bucher of Petoskey, 18.19 pounds; Mr. Barnes, 16.435 pounds; Blake Cubble of Livonia, 15.375 pounds; Ralph Bentley of DeTour, 15.365 pounds; Gary Zwolinski of Goetzville, 15.75 pounds; Ralph Bentley, 14.3 pounds; Jan Busher of Petoskey, 14.4 pounds.

The DeTour Homemakers announced Tom Early as the winner of the quilt the group worked on all last winter. Pattern and supplies were donated by Sharon Goetz. Proceeds from the Homemakers events are always donated to charitable organizations in the area. Congratulations to Mr. Early.

Entertaining at the DeTour marina this Saturday, August 11, is the band, The Wise Guys. Members of the band include Jackie and Dan Beckwith, originally from Pickford, and Thane Doremire from the Grayling area. They play music from the '40s to some of today's favorites including Motown, classic rock, blues, and disco. This is their first appearance at the DeTour concert series. Plan to attend the Saturday evening concert starting at 7:45 p.m.

The performance of the mystery/ comedy "Good Help is Hard to Murder" is coming up. Evening performances are scheduled for Friday, August 17 and Saturday, August 18. A matinee performance is scheduled for Sunday, August 19.

Food for thought: Cookbooks are exciting, because they contain so many stirring events.
