(Photograph courtesy of Dean Stadlberger) Volunteer fireman gathered for the second annual St. Ignace Volunteer Fireman's Association fishing tournament, hosted by Gary Sorenson Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15.
The event started with a meal cooked on the grill. Just after dinner, the St. Ignace Fire Department was called out to the Sand Dunes on US-2 to respond to a motor home fire.
Saturday morning started with a breakfast cooked by Dave Giacherio. At 11:30 a.m., final tournament instructions were given, and with overcast skies, light rain, and whitecaps on Big Brevort Lake, four boats and nine men headed out for a five-hour tournament.
All fish had to be entered on the dock by 5 p.m.
"As the deadline loomed, all but two boats were docked," said tournament winner Dean Stadleberger. "Both boats raced to shore, as one ran out of gas, and the other one thought they still had more time. They were disqualified for being late, and that is still under appeal."
The year's winners were Dean Stadlberger, with a 21-inch bass, Don Giacherio, with a 17-inch walleye, and Tom Colegrove, with a 12-inch perch. Paul Downey received honorable mention with a 22-inch pike. Firemen recorded the results of the fishing expedition. Overall, 155 perch were caught, with 135 released; seven bass, with seven released; six bluegill, with three released; 14 walleye, with 13 released; three bullheads, with all released, and one pike.
The evening was topped off with a dinner and bonfire overlooking the lake. More fishing followed on Sunday.
