Robert 'Bob' Pomeroy

Robert "Bob" Pomeroy Robert "Bob" Pomeroy Robert "Bob" Pomeroy, 74, of Sault Ste. Marie, was a veteran of the Korean War and enjoyed a career in law enforcement with Michigan State Police and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He earned many commendations and citations for outstanding police service. Mr. Pomeroy passed away peacefully at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Wednesday, December 5, 2007.

He was born September 17, 1932, in St. Ignace to Manley Pomeroy and Blanche Irene (nee Belonga) Pomeroy Thompson.

A 1950 graduate of LaSalle High School in St. Ignace, he also attended the one room schoolhouse in Paradise as a child. From 1950 to 1956, he was a ferry boat cook on the Straits of Mackinac. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served as a corporal in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Pomeroy was a retired detective sergeant with the Michigan State Police from 1956 to 1980, serving at posts in Battle Creek, Stephenson, Calumet, Mount Pleasant, and Sault Ste. Marie. He was the criminal investigator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1981 to 1986, covering Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and a two time president of the Hiawatha Land Law Enforcement Officers Association. He was also a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Mr. Pomeroy was an avid fisherman and hunter, especially in the Stephenson area. Above all else, friends said, he loved his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanne Hawley Pomeroy; three sons and their families, Earl Pomeroy of Rudyard, Kevin and Pam Pomeroy of Sault Ste. Marie, and Rob and Vicki Pomeroy of Brimley; a daughter and her family, Lisa Pomeroy Saari and John Saari of Greensboro, North Carolina; his grandchildren, Kevin and Marc Pomeroy, Joshua and Sean Saari, and Michael, Connor, Renne, and Brandon Pomeroy.

He is survived by aunts Glady Pomeroy and Yvonne Belonga, both of St. Ignace; six siblings, JoAnn Vreden, Joseph Thompson, Leonard Thompson, Michael Thompson, and Gladys Bybee, all of Niles, and Minnie Shreve of Rochester, Minnesota; numerous cousins, residing mostly in the Eastern Upper Peninsula, and many friends throughout Michigan.

Mr. Pomeroy was preceded in death by his brother, Earl "Pepe" Pomeroy.

Visitation was held at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie Saturday, December 8, from noon until 2 p.m.

A memorial service was held Monday, December 10, at 11 a.m. at the Elks Lodge 552 Sault Ste. Marie, with State Police Chaplain Chris Laursen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to War Memorial Hospital, 500 Osborne Boulevard, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan 49783, or to Connor Pomeroy for future medical expenses.
