Fred Feleppa Named New Prosecutor Alfred “Fred” Feleppa III is Mackinac County’s new prosecuting attorney, having been appointed to the position by 11th Circuit Court Judge Charles Stark Friday, December 29. Mr. Feleppa will complete the remaining two years of Clayton Graham’s four-year term. Mr. Graham was elected to the 6th Probate Court Judge and was sworn into office Friday. Mr. Feleppa, 35, who has served as assistant prosecutor for the last 10 years, will receive a salary of $73,993.62. Moving into the new position, the increase in pay amounts to more than $26,000 a year. One of his first duties will be to fill the assistant prosecutor position he leaves. The 2007 salary for an incoming assistant prosecutor was cut in half by county commissioners in December, to $23,717 from $47,436. Mr. Feleppa appeared before commissioners last week requesting they reconsider the decision, but he had not yet been appointed prosecutor and commissioners said they would wait and talk with the prosecutor, once appointed. The matter is expected to be taken up by commissioners in January. Calvin “Bucky” McPhee of St. Ignace and Mike Patrick of Cedarville will replace Joe Durm of St. Ignace and Jim Farero of Cedarville on the board. As county prosecutor, Mr. Feleppa will be the county’s chief law enforcement officer and responsible for a variety duties, including prosecuting violations of felony and misdemeanor criminal laws. He also will represent the county in criminal matters and advise the board of commissioners and other county departments on legal issues. The position is up for election every four years , the next being November 2008. Mr. Feleppa and his wife, Sandy, live in St. Ignace and have two children. |
