St. Ignace Wrestlers Down Cardinals, Blue Devils

LaSalle High School wrestlers took to the road and came away with a pair of victories during a tri-match at Sault Ste. Marie over Onaway 48-34 and the host Blue Devils 39-36 Thursday, January 4.

The Saints improved to 15-3 on the season, but the wins haven't come easy. In the matchup against the Cardinals, St. Ignace won the first four matches, with Brandon Garries (119) recording a win, Sam Fitzpatrick (125) winning a first-period pin, and John Evashevski (130), and Mario Calcaterra (135) registered victories.

Rob Robinson (145) and Derek Marshall (171) notched first-period pins, James Sayles (215) tallied a second-period pin, and Mike McNeely (112) completed the win with a first-period pin.

Saints Edge Blue Devils

on Last Match

The Straits Area Conference match with the Blue Devils went the distance before the Saints pulled off the win.

The match started with the Saints winning the first four weight classes, as Sam F i t z p a t r i c k (125) won 8-1, J o h n E v a s h e v s k i (130) 7-4, and Mario Calcaterra (135) and Shawn Cowell (140) posting first period pins for a 18-0 advantage.

Sault High won the next three divisions to notch the score at 18 before St. Ignace went 2-1 during the next three matches, with Derek Marshall (171) recording a second-period pin and James Sayles (215) a third-period pin for a 30-24 lead.

The Saints forfeited the next two weight classes, at heavyweight and 103, for a 36-30 Blue Devils lead, with two matches remaining.

M i k e McNeely (112) won on a thirdperiod pin for a 36-36 score and Brandon Garries (119) clinched the win with a 7-1 decision for the t h r e e - p o i n t win.

"We have won some close matches this season," said Saints Coach Harvey Bentley. "We still need some improvements to make us better."

Saints JV Earns 32 Victories

at Gaylord Tourney

Twelve St. Ignace junior varsity wrestlers recorded 32 victories with 19 pins during the Gaylord Tournament Saturday, January 6.

Finishing first for the Saints were Tyler Oja (125) with a 4-0 record and four pins, Stefan Saffian (151) 4-0 with three pins, Kaiden Shiemke (112), Alan Honeycutt (130-A), and John E v a s h e v s k i (130-B) 4-0 with two pins.

Placing second were Billy Grogan (140) 3-1 with two pins, Eric Brown (119) 3- 1 with one pin, Rob Robinson (140) 2-2 with two pins, Andy Tamlyn (189) 2-2, Lee Kelso (171) 1-3 with one pin, and Kyle Spencer (152) 1-3 with a 13-0 decision.

Saints JV Matches

Eric Brown (119) won on a 7-6 decision and Tyler Oja (125) shut out his opponent 8-0, while Alan Honeycutt (130), Colin Chan (135), and Jesse Becker (160) lost tough matches at Sault Ste. Marie.

St. Ignace will travel to Rogers City Saturday, January 13, to compete in the Hurons Super Dual.
