Mackinac Island Hoopsters Win, Volleyball Team Splits
Lakers Hoopsters Stay Perfect in NLL

Mackinac Island Lakers basketball team stayed perfect in the Northern Lights League (NLL) with a 3-0 record after a 65-37 win over Grand Marais Friday, January 5, and upended the Polar Bears 51-42 in the non-conference match-up Saturday, January 6, to improve the overall record to 7-1.

"I was pleased with our ball movement," said Lakers Coach Jim Fisher. "We are recording more assists than earlier in the season and that has helped our overall play."

Four Hit Double Figures

Four players scored in double figures in the NLL win Friday. The team started with a 23-3 margin after the first eight minutes and led 36-18 at halftime.

Mackinac Island outscored the Polar Bears 29-19 in the second half that included a 13-9 advantage in the third quarter and 16-10 in the final period.

Rebounding Key on Saturday

Balanced rebounding was the key for the Lakers with five players totaling 46 boards to lift Mackinac Island to the win Saturday.

The Lakers led 15-9 after the first eight minutes and took a 28- 22 lead into halftime after both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter and the Lakers held a 23-20 offensive advantage in the second half.

Lakers Stats: Woody Beardsley, 20 points, 15 rebounds, three assists; Tyler McLean, 15 points, six rebounds, three steals; Riley Chaffee, nine points, 12 rebounds; Michael Gamble, three points, eight assists, five rebounds; Tymon Horn, two points, seven rebounds; Caleb Straight, two points.

Mackinac Island will host Beaver Island in key Northern Lights League weekend series Friday, January 12, and Saturday, January 13.

Lakers Volleyball Splits

The Mackinac Island volleyball squad fell to Grand Marais Friday, January 5, but the Lakers came back to down the Polar Bears Saturday, January 6.

The Lakers lost the first two games, 18-25 and 21-25, and defeated the Polar Bears 25-14 and 25-10, before dropping the deciding match, 13-15, Friday.

During the match Saturday morning, the Lakers won 25- 19, 25-19, and 25-11.

"We played much better on Saturday," said Lakers Coach Mary Patay. "We didn't get down on each other and played well as a team."
