Gould City
By Marilyn McNeil 477-6925 donmar@lighthouse.net

The lack of snow this winter, and I'm not complaining, has reduced some of the "winter games." I'm sure it has had its bad side for the resort owners, who rely on the snow for customers. But we will probably get our share before it's over.

The "Winter Break for Knowledge" will be held beginning Saturday, March 3, in Newberry. The event, sponsored by Tahquamenon Area Schools, will offer approximately 25 classes in all. Registration brochures will be mailed to past participants and distributed in the community in early February.

If you haven't attended in the past, and would like to receive a registration brochure, contact the Luce County MSU Extension office at (906) 293-3203.

Anyone interested in earning certification to teach swimming lessons in the summer can register at the community school office at Newberry High School or by calling (906) 293-3282. The course will be offered Wednesdays from 6:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. for 10 weeks beginning Wednesday, January 24, at the Rudyard pool. Participants must be at least 16 years of age to swim.

Plans are being made through Danny's Auto Value in Newberry to receive donations for three-year-old Iris Wass, who was injured by the family's dog recently. Danny's will also be raffling off a rifle to increase proceeds. The money received will go toward helping to pay for Iris's injuries and the costs associated with her stay at the University of Michigan Hospital.

Happy birthday to Cherrell Rourke January 14 and Sarah Burton January 19.

Best wishes to John and Sandy Ketcher, who celebrated their wedding anniversary January 12.

Stay safe and stay well. See you next week.
