Free Radon Test Kits Available

Free radon test kits are available from the Luce-Mackinac- Alger-Schoolcraft (LMAS) Health Department. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that is naturally dispersed in outdoor air, but can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Exposure to radon gas has been linked to lung cancer.

One out of eight homes in Michigan is estimated to have elevated radon levels. Once detected, the problem can be corrected by contractors, the health department reports, and the costs range from $800 to $2,500.

To obtain a free radon test kit or more information, call the health department at 643-1100.
