Members of Engadine United Methodist Church enjoyed presenting a live nativity scene in December. Here, angels Maria Bartholomew (from left), Caryn Bartholomew, Allison Grant, Hannah Fettig, and Bryana Biang appear to shepherds, bringing news of Jesus' birth.
The snow has finally found us.

The weather will not affect all of the activities that have been planned for this month. The first one is "Winter's Night by Candlelight" at Newberry United Methodist Church Friday, January 26. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.

This event will benefit the survivors of last year's devastating hurricanes. All proceeds will be used by a team from the Newberry and Engadine United Methodist Churches to purchase building materials they will use next month while helping Alabama Gulf Shore residents rebuild their homes and their lives. All members pay their own transportation and expenses to reach the areas where their work is needed.

The menu includes hors d'oeuvres, herb salad with fruit, and slow-roasted pork with peach barbecue sauce or empress lemongrilled chicken breast, steamed vegetables, rice pilaf, rolls, fruit truffle, or cherry chocolate cake with hot fudge sauce. This wonderful menu is being prepared by Carol Harper.

Tickets are by donation. Purchase tickets no later than Wednesday, January 24. For further information, call (906) 293-5711 or (906) 477-9989.

Danny's Auto in Newberry and Engadine is collecting donations for the little girl who was recently injured by the family's dog in Newberry. The monies will help pay for her medical expenses.

The Michigan State Police would like to warn residents of a potential telephone scam. Some residents are receiving calls from unknown persons purporting to represent the Michigan State Police, asking for donations of money. Larry Gasperich, post commander in Iron Mountain, wants to remind residents that the Michigan State Police does not solicit money donations by any means for any reason. He also reminds everyone not to give out personal information over the telephone unless absolutely sure you know who you're speaking with and that the request is legitimate.
