Gerald Munro

Gerald Munro
Gerald William Munro, 85, of DeTour Village, was a World War II Navy veteran who worked on the Great Lakes freighters and served as constable in DeTour for many years. Mr. Munro died Saturday, January 20, 2007, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born January 6, 1922, in DeTour to William Earl and Orline Clare (nee St. Onge) Munro.

A lifelong DeTour resident, Mr. Munro served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked for 27 years on Great Lakes freighters, first on the fueling crew and then as a sailor. Mr. Munro served as constable in DeTour for many years. He was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid baseball fan.

Mr. Munro is survived by his wife, Billy, whom he married February 4, 1949, in Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters and their families, Diane and Gerald Nettleton and Jerri D. and James Harris, both of DeTour; two sons and their families, Roderick and Patti Munro of DeTour and Cameron and Jo- Ann Munro of Valparaiso, Indiana; nine grandchildren and their families, Brian and Angela Nettleton, Shane Nettleton, Krista and Scott Neels, Tom Munro, Brad Newell, Amy and Melvin Bennett, Jody and Russell Maddin, Charity Munro, and Melody Munro; seven great-grandchildren, Eden Nettleton, Emily Bennett, Alexis Fountain Maddin, Samantha Bailey, Ava Nettleton, Grace Neels, and Wesley Bennett. Also surviving are one sister and her family, Suzanne and Donald Stevenson of Sault Ste. Marie, and one brother and his family, Donald and Eileen Munro of Milford, Ohio.

Mr. Munro was preceded in death by two brothers, William "Bid" Munro and Roderick Munro.

Services were held Tuesday, January 23, at DeTour Union Presbyterian Church in DeTour. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a funeral at 3 p.m. with the Reverend Judith Arnold and Pastor Milton Adams officiating.

Spring burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour Township.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
