Four Area Teams Post Hoops Wins Tuesday

Four of five area basketball teams posted wins Tuesday, January 16, with Cedarville upending Brimley 88-32, Engadine defeating Rapid River 63-58, DeTour beating Vanderbilt 56-39, and Rudyard edging Pellston 60- 59.

Trojans Trounce Bays

The Cedarville defense held Brimley to single digit scoring in three of four quarters as the Trojans offense scored 47 points in the second half en route to the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference win.

The Trojans led 25-8 after the first eight minutes and held a 22- 12 margin in the second quarter for a 47-20 halftime lead.

Cedarville outscored the Bays 22-6 in the third quarter and closed out the league contest with a 19-6 advantage.

Trojans Stats: Jordan Duncan, 17 points; C.J. Paquin, 14 points; Kevin Thompson and Justin Baker, 12 points; Matt Hansen, nine points; Jason Duncan and Cody Thompson, eight points; Jordan Sweeney and Sheldon Tassier, four points.

Bays Stats: Jerrod Dillon, eight points; Preston Parish, seven points; Frank St. George, five points; Michael Graham, Jordan Dillon, and Mike Phillips, three points; Chris Carrick, two points; Steve Phillips, one point.

Eagles Control Rockets

Engadine took control late in the first eight minutes during the non-conference game with an 11-8 lead and outscored Rapid River 20-11 in the second quarter for a 31-19-halftime advantage.

The Eagles held a 14-12 scoring edge in the third quarter for a 45- 31 lead before the Rockets cut the final score to five points, with a 27-18 margin in the final period.

The Eagles scored three triples and went 14 of 23 from the free throw line, while the Rockets hit seven treys and shot 11 of 16 from the charity stripe.

Eagles Stats: David Derusha, 21 points, five rebounds, three steals; Stefen Albright, 14 points, six assists, two steals; Grayson Hood, 14 points, five rebounds; John Troyer, nine points, 17 rebounds; Doug Fulton, three points, Michael Bennett, two points.

Eagles Fall in JV Game

Rapid River defeated Engadine 53-45 in the junior varsity game as Phillip Hood and Michael Klobucher scored 11 points each for the Eagles.

for Raiders in Triumph

DeTour turned a one-point lead after three quarters into a 17-point win after outscoring Vanderbilt 21- 6 in the final period.

The Raiders, which improved to a 6-3 overall record, led 10-6 after the first eight minutes, but the visiting Yellowjackets took a 24-18 halftime lead with a 16-8 advantage in the second quarter.

D e T o u r bounced back to take a 34-33 lead into the final period with a 16-9 margin in the third quarter before exploding for a 15- point advantage in the final eight minutes of the non-conference game.

Raiders Stats: Nathan Klamerus and Craig Wasnich, 12 points; Andrew Dyal eight points, 11 rebounds; Tom Munro, eight points; Tom Worden, six points; Josh Wilson, four points; Stan Stocking and Tyler Anderson, two points; Darrell Plont, one point.

Bulldogs Edge Hornets

Rudyard improved to 4-6 on the season after a one point non-conference win over Pellston.

Pellston held a 17-14 lead after the first eight minutes before the Bulldogs took a 32-31 scoring edge into halftime with an 18-14 advantage.

Both teams scored 28 points in the second half, including a 15-14 margin by Rudyard in the third quarter and 14-13 edge for the visiting Hornets in the final period.

Rudyard scored 22 field goals, four treys, and shot 12 of 14 from the free throw line, while Pellston made 22 field goals, one triple, and shot 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.

Bulldogs Stats: Craig Wallis, 19 points; Dan Bartley, 10 points, nine rebounds; Chastin McKelvie, 10 points, seven assists; Isiah Otten, Arik Hesselink, and Chris Turner, seven points.
