Township Names Committee for New Bike Path
By Amy Polk

Citing a need to clarify the township's responsibility for the Les Cheneaux Bike Path, the Clark Township board made "Clark Township Bike Path Committee" the official name of the ad-hoc committee working on the bike path project.

The project itself is officially named "Les Cheneaux Bike Path, a project of Clark Township" in marketing materials. The Les Cheneaux Bike Path will be a 22- mile segment of the non-motorized North Huron Scenic Pathway that will extend from St. Ignace to Drummond Island.

Ronda McGreevy, a co-chair of the committee, attended the township board meeting Thursday, January 18.

After discussion about whether to use the name "Clark Township" or "Les Cheneaux" for the committee, trustees settled on leaving the name Les Cheneaux Bike Path, which has been incorporated into a logo, but named the committee after Clark Township to alleviate confusion about where funds and donations should be directed.

The township board paid $650 for the logo, which features a bicycle rider and hikers.

A meeting at which 12 public and nonprofit agencies will discuss environmental, safety, and health concerns will be held Wednesday, February 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cedarville Inn. Attending will be the Chippewa/ East Mackinac Conservation District, Eastern Upper Peninsula Nature Tourism Alliance, Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning and Development Commission, Les Cheneaux Watershed Council, Little Traverse Conservancy, Mackinac County Road Commission, Michigan Nature Association, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, The Nature Conservancy, and the United States Department of Agriculture.

Future meetings will be held for landowners along the proposed route, Mrs. McGreevy said.

In December, the project received $10,000 from the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation's Economic Development Fund, in addition to $3,000 the group has given for an information campaign.
