Donald Anthony

Donald Amos Anthony of St. Ignace, whose Native American name was Walking Bear, was a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. A veteran of the Korean War, he served for six years in the U.S. Army, much of it in Germany. He spent much of his life working as a Great Lakes commercial fisherman, before becoming a part the Kewadin Shores Casino security team. Mr. Anthony was also a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5114 in St. Ignace.

Mr. Anthony, 70, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Tendercare nursing home in Sault Ste. Marie. He had been ill for two years.

He was born July 27, 1936, in Sault Ste. Marie. He joined the Army following high school graduation. Later, Mr. Anthony lived in St. Ignace for 19 years.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; a son and his family, Brian and Diane of East Jordan; daughters and their families, Dannon Anthony of Shingleton, Donzel Anthony of Beaver Island, Theresa Wabininkee of South Haven, and Daneen Anthony of Charlevoix; one brother and his family, George and Paulene Anthony of Traverse City; five sisters and their families, Bernice Suhr, Darlene Sholes, Evon Pirsein, Janice Grooms, all of South Haven, and Margaret Mallory of Levering; three stepchildren, Constance Bullis of South Haven, John Pensinger of Charlevoix, and George Pensinger Jr. of South Haven; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Darrel and Donald Jr.

The family received friends at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace Friday, January 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parish prayers were led at 8 p.m. by Deacon Donald Olmstead.

Services were Saturday, January 27, at 11 a.m. at Dodson Funeral Home, with John Hascall officiating.
