Six Saints Wrestlers Place at Gaylord Invitational

Six LaSalle High School wrestlers placed at the prestigious Northern Michigan Open Invitational in Gaylord Saturday, January 27.

Seniors Derek Marshall (in the 171-pound weight division) and James Sayles (215-pound weight division) placed fourth with 3-2 records. Finishing fifth were Brandon Garries (119) with a 3-1 mark and Shawn Cowell (140) at 3- 2. Placing seventh was Mario Calcaterra (130) with a 4-1 record, while Mike McNeely (112) posted a 3-1 record for the day.

The tournament fielded 28 teams, with St. Ignace placing 14th overall.

"I was pleased with our effort," said Saints Coach Harvey Bentley. "This is the toughest meet of the season for our wrestlers."

at Sault High Tourney

Twelve St. Ignace wrestlers placed at the Sault Ste. Marie Junior Varsity Invitational Saturday, January 27.

Four Saints wrestlers won their individual weight classes with undefeated records, including Eric Brown

Brandon Garries registered two victories in the Saints matches against Rogers City and Rudyard.

Finishing second were Alan Honeycutt (130), Kaiden Shiemke

112), Billy Grogan (140), and Jesse Becker (145). Placing third were Steffan Saffian (152), Nate Tamlyn (160), Matt Arthur (112), and Eric Grondin (152).

Matt Arthur broke his arm during the meet and will be out for the remainder of the season.

Saints Wrestlers Drop

Pair of SAC Matches

The St. Ignace wrestling team dropped two Straits Area Conference home matches, losing to Rogers City 43-19 and Rudyard 38- 33 Thursday, January 25.

The Saints fell to 22-9 on the season in dual matches and were led by Sam Fitzpatrick (125), Brandon Garries (119), Shawn Cowell (140- 145), and James Sayles (215), all with 2-0 records.

Fitzpatrick recorded a 7-3 decision and a pin, Garries 4-0 decision and pin, Cowell 15-5 major decision and one forfeit win, and Sayles two forfeit wins.

Kelso earned a well deserved 14- 12 decision and John Evashevski (130) earned a win with a 7-2 decision. Both went 1-1. Billy Grogan (140) 1-0 won on a pin.

St. Ignace had to give up 12 points after forfeiting the 103-pound and heavyweight classes.

Parents Night was celebrated at LaSalle High School and five seniors, Sam Fitzpatrick, James Sayles, Mario Calcaterra, Lee Kelso, and Colin Chan, were honored for their dedication and hard work while competing for the Saints.
