Free Throws Lift Comets To Win

Mackinaw City outscored DeTour 17-9 from the free throw line and made 11 of 13 in the fourminute overtime period en route to a 55-46 non-conference win Tuesday, January 23.
The Comets connected on 17 of 24 (71 percent) shooting from the free throw line, while the Raiders made nine of 20 (48 percent). The Comets took advantage of the free throw line during the extra period, scoring all of their 11 overtime points from the stripe.
"This was a good win on the road and the way we shot our free throws was a key," said Comets Coach Garth Law.
Nathan Klamerus scored at the buzzer for DeTour to send the game into overtime tied at 44. In the extra period, Chase Closs hit seven of eight shots from the line, Logan Paquet shot two of three, and Austin Martin made two of two.
Mackinaw City, 9-2 overall on the season, held a 10-8 scoring edge after the first eight minutes before DeTour took a 25-22 halftime lead after outscoring the Comets 17-12 in the second quarter.
The Comets led 34-32 after three quarters with a 12-7 margin and, late in the final period, Logan Paquet scored the final four points in regulation for Mackinaw City before Klamerus scored the lay-up in the closing seconds.

DeTour won the junior varsity game, defeating Mackinaw City 56-40 as Luke Alexander scored 24 points for the Comets.
