Firehawks Win Green Bay Hockey Tourney

St. Ignace Firehawks won the Green Bay Hockey Tournament splitting their two games Saturday, January 20, and capturing the championship with a win Sunday, January 21.

In the opening round, the Firehawks fell to New Trier 2-1 in the opener and defeated Cary Grove 7-6 to advance to the finals.

Taylor Dykstra scored the lone goal and Mike McKillip recorded the assist in the first game.

During the win over Cary Grove, seven players scored goals for the Firehawks. Tyler Christensen, Ronnie Bennett, and Taylor Dykstra scored single goals and chipped in assists; Joe Dotson, Kyle Stabile, Kyle Maleport added goals, and Ben Maleport made one assist.

In the championship game, Matt Zalewski scored one goal and chipped in one assist, Joe Dotson and Bryant Danielson notched goals, and Ben Maleport, Tyler Christensen, Kyle Maleport, and Matt Savro had single assists.

Firehawks 1-2 Against Holland

St. Ignace Firehawks finished 1-2 against the Holland Ice Dogs during Midget AA action at the Norris Center in Sault Ste. Marie Saturday, January 27, and Sunday, January 28.

The Firehawks split their games Friday defeating the Ice Dogs 4-2 and losing 4-3.

In the win, Mike McKillip scored one goal and added one assist, Ben Maleport, Kyle Maleport, and Taylor Dykstra chipped in single goals, and Matt Zalewski, Tyler Christensen, Kyle Stabile, Bryant Danielson, and Ronnie Bennett recorded assists.

Nick Bell played outstanding in goal for the Firehawks.

In the second game Saturday, Matt Sauro, Nick Benko, and Ben Maleport scored goals. Kyle Stabile, Bryant Danielson, and Kyle Maleport notched assists.

On Sunday, Ben Maleport and Kyle Maleport scored the Firehawks goals and Matt Zalewski and Jack Goudreau chipped in the assists.

District tournaments, a best of two of three series play, will be held Saturday, February 3, and Sunday, February 4. The first game will be held in Traverse City at Howe Arena Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

The teams will return to Little Bear East to battle Sunday at 10 a.m. and the third game, if necessary, will be played at 3:30 p.m.

The Firehawks will be home Saturday, February 10, against Battle Creek. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. The team will then face Dearborn Saturday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m.
