Agnes LaChapelle

Agnes LaChapelle, 89, of St. Ignace, taught at the Ursuline Academy for several years and worked as a probate registrar for Judge Theut for more than 18 years. Mrs. LaChapelle died Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at her home, following a lingering illness.

She was born to Peter and Grace Dunn on September 15, 1917, in Blue Earth, Minnesota. She was graduated from high school in 1935 and went on to earn an education degree at Mankota Teachers College.

Mrs. LaChapelle worked for Civil Aeronautics in Chicago, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Toledo before moving to St. Ignace. She taught at the Ursuline Academy in St. Ignace for several years. She retired as probate registrar for Judge George "Jack" Theut after serving more than 18 years.

Mrs. LaChapelle was an active church member for the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also the coordinator for funeral breakfasts for St. Ann's Altar Society up until her illness.

She married Drayton LaChapelle June 7, 1947, in Minnesota. He died February 24, 2006.

Mrs. LaChapelle is survived by daughters and their families, Monica and Rick Silet of St. Ignace, Margaret Howey of St. Johns, Elaine and Mark MacDonald of St. Ignace, Kathy and Mike Bay of West Bloomfield; sisters, Lucille Shaughnessy of Chicago, Patricia Smith of Marquette; sisters-in-law and their families, Marjorie and Albert Litzner of Bay City, Merlyn Lloyd of Cheboygan, Mary LaChapelle of Milwaukee, Edith Dunn of St. Paul, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Peter, who died November 24, 1993, two brothers, Jim and Bill Dunn; and two sisters, Mary Layhee and Dorothy Dunn.

A funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 10, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Father Jim Williams and Father Norbert Landreville officiating.

Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery in the spring.

Dodson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
