Mackinac Island Volleyball Wins, Basketball Loses at Beaver Island

Mackinac Island's volleyball team won three of four matches while the Lakers basketball team fell to Beaver Island Wednesday, February 7, in a Northern Lights League (NLL) series that was postponed from Friday, February 2.

The Lakers volleyball team won the first two matches, 26-24 and 25- 18, lost the third, 22-25, and stormed back to post a 25-17 decision in the fourth match.

Lakers Stats: Kristi Kamphuis 18 points (missed just one serve), seven aces, 15 kills, six blocks, four digs; Marie Bunker, 16 points, five aces, five kills, two digs, one block; Morgan Brodeur-Bunker, eight points, four serves, 13 sets; Karlena Mosley, seven points, five aces, four kills, three digs; Shelbie Mosley, two points, four digs; Michi Mullings, one point, four kills, one dig; Shayleen Mosley, one point, one kill, one dig; Danielle Wightman, three kills; Arial Leeper, one kill.

The Laker hoopsters did not fare as well as Mackinac Island fell to the Islanders 60-46.

Mackinac Island led 12-10 after the first eight minutes before the host Islanders held a 16-13 margin in the second quarter for a 26-25- halftime lead.

Beaver Island outscored the Lakers 34-21 in the second half, including a 19-11 tally in the third quarter and 15-10 in the final period.

Lakers Stats: Woody Beardsley, 14 points; Tyler McLean, 11 points; Riley Chaffee, nine points; Michael Gamble, eight points; Robert Chambers, four points.

The Lakers will close out the regular season with their final weekend series at Grand Marais Friday, February 16, and Saturday, February 17. Coach Fisher and his Lakers are 14-3 overall, stand 8-1 in the NLL, have clinched a shared of the league championship, and could win the title outright with a win at Grand Marais Friday, February 16.
