LaSalle Boys, Pickford Girls Win EUP Track Opener

St. Ignace boys and Pickford girls track and field teams captured top honors during the first track meet of the year in the Eastern Upper Peninsula at the LaSalle High School Kiwanis Track Complex Thursday, April 19.

Team Results

The Saints tallied 72 points in the boys meet, followed by Cedarville with 63, Pickford 56, Rudyard 25, Brimley 23, and DeTour 20.

Pickford recorded 87 points in the girls division, followed by St. Ignace with 57.5, Cedarville 55.5, Brimley 25, DeTour 23, and Rudyard 10.

Individual Boys Results

St. Ignace

The Saints swept the four relay races and won three individual events en route to the win under beautiful skies and warm temperatures.

At right, Justin Baker of Cedarville and Derrick Clark of St. Ignace run in sync over hurdles during the early part of a high hurdles event. Baker won the race in 17.22 seconds. Clark finished a close second with a time of 17.65.
The 400-relay team of Steffan Saffian, Anthony Lester, Kyle Smock, and Derrick Clark won with a time of 48.67 seconds.

The 800 foursome of Gerrit Mortensen, Lester, Smock, and Clark finished first in one minute and 39.54 seconds, while the 1600- meter team of Derek Marshall, Nick Montie, Mario Calcaterra, and Smock placed first in 3:53.98, and the 3200-meter relay team of Ben Matelski, Calcaterra, Montie, and Marshall in 9:17.

Derrick Clark won the pole vault with a height of 12'0" and took second in the high hurdles. Mario Calcaterra won the long jump with a leap of 17'1" and placed second in the low hurdles. Anthony Lester won the high jump with a mark of 5'8" and took third in the 200-meter dash.

Evan Everson placed second in the 800 and fifth in the 100, while Ben Matelski placed second in the long jump. Kyle Smock finished third in the 100-meter dash. Also finishing third were Derek Marshall in the 400-meter dash, Frankie Beaudoin in the discus, and Gerrit Mortensen in the 400-meter dash.

The Saints Anthony Lester won the high jump with a height of 5'8".
"I was pleased with our effort," said Saints Coach David Brines. "We are thin in some events, but everyone worked hard and came through with a strong showing."

Cedarville

Justin Baker won two events to lead the Trojans, with victories in the high hurdles in 17.22 and low hurdles in 44.63. Clayton Myers won the 800-meter dash in 2:18.73.

Joe Currie finished second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Sheldon Tassier third in the 1600- meter run and fourth in the 800. Kevin Thompson placed third in the pole vault. Jimmy Eberts took third in the low hurdles, and Jordan Sweeney third in the 800. Placing fourth were Peter Trevelen in the 100-meter dash, C.J. Paquin in the 200 and long jump, and Matt Hansen in the high jump. Finishing fifth were Cody Thompson in the low hurdles and high jump, and Aaron Sherlund in the 3200-meter run.

Pickford

Scott Coullard led the Panthers with victories in the meter dash in 11.86, 200 in 24.33, and 400 in 53.06. Joe Jenkins won the shot put (with a toss of 40'3") and the discus (with a throw of 102'6"), and Richard Gibson placed first in the 1600-meter run in 5:02.17, and placed fourth in the 400-meter run.

Nic Raden finished second in the 3200-meter run. Jonah Hascall finished second in the pole vault, Mickael Cantin third in the shot put, Cody Stephenson fourth in the low hurdles, Nathan Gregg fourth in the discus, and McKinley Portice fifth in the shot put.

The Panthers 1600-meter relay team took second, the 800- and 3200-meter relay groups placed third, and the 400-meter foursome finished fourth.

Rudyard

Isiah Otten led the Bulldogs with a win in the 3200-meter run in 11:28.85 and second in the 1600. Brady Burby took second in the shot put event, while Karl Dewitt placed third in the high hurdles. Tony Falbo took third in the long jump. Ben Gable took fifth in the 200. The Bulldogs 400-meter relay team took third, and the 800 foursome placed fifth.

A new building for the public address announcer and scorers at LaSalle High School's Kiwanis Track Complex was put to use during Thursday's meet. The building was framed in by the high school construction class last fall. It was completed with new steps by maintenance supervisor Jack McLean and students Jake Smith, Billy Matson, and Seth Tamlyn during spring break.
Brimley

Harlan Chartrand took second in the 400 and Ryan Freedman second in the 200 to lead the Bays. Ken Swiderson placed fourth in the 1600 and fifth in the 800, and Preston Parish placed fifth in the discus. The Bays 1600-meter relay team finished third, its 800-meter relay foursome took fourth, and Pickford's 3200-meter relay team took fifth.

DeTour Teryn Miller placed second in the high jump and fourth in the 3200-meter run, while Stan Stocking took third in the 3200- meter run. Max Peterson took fifth in the long jump, and the Raiders 3200-meter relay team finished fourth.

Individual Girls Results

Pickford

Jasmine Ledy led the Panthers with a win in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:03.90; she took second in the 800-meter run, and fifth in the 3200-meter run.

Katie Jenkins won the shot put with a throw of 32'5.5" and she took second in the discus. Veronica Gough placed first in the high hurdles with a time of 18.45 seconds. Jessie Ledy won the pole vault with a height of 8'6."

Caitlin Mortinsen finished second in the 100 and third in the 200 and 400. Renae Reich placed second in the high jump and fourth in the 200, while Courtney Bruni second in the low hurdles and third in the high hurdles, Amanda Felty took fourth in the 400, Jamie Rittenberg placed fourth in the low hurdles, Alli Priskhorn took fourth in the shot put, Veronica Morrison placed fifth in the 200 and long jump, and Savannah Sterling earned fifth in the discus.

St. Ignace

Kelsey Cryderman won the 200 in 29.31 and the 400 in 1:06.34 to lead the Saints. Chelsey Swope won the 800 in 2:42.17, while Kayla Gustin took second in the high hurdles and third in the low hurdles.

Chelsea Bosley took second in the shot put and fourth in the discus, and Jaimee Bloxsom placed second in the pole vault. Dani Ford took third in the 100, Jessica Massaway took third in the pole vault, Christi Therrian took third in the shot put, and Erica Ahlich and Kali Jo Marshall placed fourth in the pole vault. Samantha Radecki took fourth in the long jump, and Kristen Olsen finished fifth in the 1600.

The 800-meter relay team of Stacee Schnicke, Kayla Gustin, Dani Ford, and Kelsey Cryderman won in 1:06.34 and the 400-meter foursome of Samantha Radecki, Stacee Schnicke, Dani Ford, and Kelsey Cryderman took second.

Cedarville

The 3200-meter relay team of Lindsay McLeod, Katie Bowlby, Ashley Sweeney, and Billie McLeod won with a time of 11:20, and Emily Feldhake won the discus with a throw of 84'6" and took fourth in the 800.

Ashley Sweeney took third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600. Katie Bowlby finished third in the long jump. Carissa Sudol took third in the discus. Rebecca Bickham took third in the pole vault, and Megan Hill placed fourth in the high hurdles and fifth in the 100.

Kara Griffin finished fourth in the 3200, while Jessie Duncan finished fifth in the 400, and 00 Loinberg fifth in the 800.

The Trojans' 1600-meter relay team took second and the 400- and 800-meter foursomes placed fifth.

Brimley

Kelley Graham won the 3200- meter run in 13:40.02 and took second in the 1600-meter run. Rachel Carruthers won the 100-meter dash in 14.14.

The Bays' 800- and 1600-meter relay teams took third, while the 400-meter relay group took fourth.

DeTour

Amber Burton finished second in the 3200-meter run, third in the 1600, and fourth in the high jump.

Danielle Wyman placed second in the 200 dash. Nicole Melcer took third in the high jump, and Liz Lehman finished fifth in the low hurdles. Korin Goetz took fifth in the shot put. Saints Teams Fourth and Sixth

at Season Opener in Boyne City

The St. Ignace boys team finished fourth and the girls team took sixth during the Boyne City Invitational to open the 2007 track season Wednesday, April 18.

Kyle Smock won the 100-meter dash in 11.84 to lead the Saints, while Derrick Clark finished second in the high hurdles and pole vault and fifth in the shot put.

Jesse Becker took second in the 100, Ben Matelski took second in the long jump, and Mario Calcaterra finished third in the long jump and fifth in the 800.

Shane Spring took fourth in the high hurdles, Anthony Lester took fourth in the high jump, and Derek Marshall finished fifth in the 400.

The Saints 400-meter relay team took second, while the 1600- and 3200-meter foursomes placed third. The 800-meter relay team finished fourth.

Kelsey Cryderman won the 400- meter dash in 1:05.00 and placed second in the 200 for the girls. Jaimee Bloxsom placed third in the pole vault, while Kayla Gustin finished fifth in the high hurdles.

Chelsea Bosley was fifth in the shot put, while Samantha Radecki took sixth in the long jump, and Erica Ahlich and Jessica Massaway tied for seventh in the pole vault. The Saints 800-meter relay team took third, while the 3200-meter relay group was fourth, and the 400- meter relay foursome was sixth.

Engadine Boys Finish

Fifth at Superior Dome Meet

Senior Grayson Hood won three events to lead the Engadine boys to a fifth-place finish out of 16 teams during the Superior Dome meet Thursday, April 19.

Hood won the 55 high hurdles in 8.03, the 100-meter dash in 11.80, and the 200-meter dash in 24.75.

John Troyer won the discus with a throw of 122'10" and took third in the shot put. Stefan Albright finished second in the long jump, and Chris Keller took seventh in the high hurdles.
