Dreyer Announces Great Lakes Swim

Marathon swimmer Jim Dreyer of Byron Center will not return to the Straits of Mackinac to set a long-distance swimming record, but will attempt to swim the entire length of the Great Lakes basin from Duluth, Minnesota, to Cape Vincent, New York, he announced April 19.

He will attempt the feat in June 2008 to cap his Great Lakes swimming series, in which he has swum across all five Great Lakes and the length of Lake Michigan, setting 14 world records. His attempt to set a world distance record in the Straits of Mackinac ended August 30, 2006, after Mr. Dreyer had battled the Straits' swift currents for 49 hours.
