Engadine Hello, everyone. Can you believe it's May already? Schools will soon be out for summer vacation. It's hard to believe another school year has come and gone. The Curtis Area Chamber of Commerce will meet Wednesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Chamber office. This will be a spring mixer, hot dog roast, and potluck meal. Everyone is invited. Cleanup Day for Garfield Township residents will be Saturday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until the dumpsters are full. One pickup load per household will be allowed. Contact the hall at (906) 477-6481 for items that are, or are not accepted. Location drop-off will be at the Naubinway ball field parking lot in Naubinway. Engadine residents will also have to use this drop-off location. No disposal will be allowed unless a township official is at location. Cleanup Day for Hudson Township residents will be Saturday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, or until the truck is full, at the Hudson Township Hall located on Church Street in Rexton. Limit one mattress per family. No wood, tires, paint, batteries, roofing, building materials, or household garbage is allowed. Refrigerators and freezers must have Freon removed. Auditions for "You Can't Get There From Here," a play in two acts by Pat Cook, produced by the Curtis Community Arts Council, will be Monday, May 21, and Tuesday, May 22, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Curtis Park Center. Scripts are available for preview at the Newberry Library, Curtis Library, Curtis Service, and the Engadine Library. You don't have to preview the script in order to audition. The Portage Anglers Walleye Jamboree 2007 in Curtis is planned for Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 25, through Sunday, May 27. There will be prizes for the largest walleye caught over the three-day weekend, and the grand prize will be a wonderful boat package. Entry fee is $50 per person (adult). Amateurs only. The fee includes a steak dinner at Interlaken Lodge. Kids division is age 12 and younger, with a $10 entry fee. Proceeds will go toward lake improvements. "Musical Chairs" is the theme of this year's Art on the Lake art project in Curtis. Paint and decorate any chair or stool, and turn it in to Lynda at Curtis Service by Monday, June 25. The finished chairs or stools will be displayed throughout the Curtis area and then auctioned off at Art on the Lake. Proceeds go to Art on the Lake/Curtis Community Arts Council. Upper Peninsula Single District 10 Lions Club is collecting used computer ink cartridges (except Epson) to help raise money for the 2007 Curtis Independence Day parade. Cartridges may be placed in designated boxes at the Fish and Hunt Shop, Curtis Elementary, Manistique Lakes Clinic, State Savings Bank in Curtis, Naubinway, and Manistique, Jack's Supervalue in Manistique, Newberry High School, and First National Bank of St. Ignace in Newberry. Boucha-Draves-Raski VFW will have a meeting for election of officers Wednesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the post home in Engadine. A Mother's Day breakfast buffet is slated for Sunday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., open to the public. An auxiliary meeting will be Wednesday, May 16, at 7 p.m. Members should wear their uniforms. The first fish fry of the season will be Friday, May 18, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., open to the public. Memorial services will be held Sunday, May 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mill Pond Park in Engadine.
