Pickford Girls, N. Central Boys Win Web Morrison Track Invitational

Pickford girls and North Central boys track and field teams captured the championship of the sixth annual Web Morrison Track and Field Invitational in Pickford Saturday, April 28.

The event is named in honor of the former Pickford High School track coach who won 27 Upper Peninsula-State titles during his tenure with the Panthers program.

Eleven teams competed for team and individual honors, which included the host Panthers, Cedarville, Engadine, DeTour, Rudyard, Newberry, Brimley, and Mackinac Island. Also participating were Class C Bloomingdale, coached by former Pickford standout Shawn Cottle; Class C Rogers City, coached by Pickford alumnus Mandi Bishop; and Class D North Central, headed by Jerry Root, former coach and teacher at Cedarville.

GIRLS DIVISION

Pickford recorded a total of 124 points to post the girls' win, followed by North Central with 76, Bloomingdale 63, Engadine 55.5, Cedarville 54, Brimley 50, Newberry 40, DeTour 23.5, Rogers City 21, Rudyard 19, and Mackinac Island 1.

School Record in Pole Vault

Jessie Ledy set a new Pickford High School record with a height of 9'9.25" to win the pole vault. She also posted a win in the long jump with a leap of 13'10.5" to lead the Panthers.

Katie Jenkins won the shot put with a toss of 34'10" and took fifth in the discus, while the Panthers won the 400-meter relay in 55.47, the 800-meter relay in 1:57.30, and the 1600-meter event in 4:35.00. The team also placed third in the 3200-meter relay.

Caitlin Mortinsen finished second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200 and 400. Kaylynn Portice placed second in the discus and sixth in the shot put, while Veronica Gough placed second in the high hurdles, and Renae Reich placed second in the high jump.

Courtney Bruni took fourth in the low hurdles and sixth in the high hurdles. Jasmine Ledy placed fourth in the 1600-meter run, while Veronica Morrison took fifth in the 200, and Caroline Lantzy and Amanda Felty tied for sixth in the pole vault.

Engadine: Elicia Derusha finished second in the 800- and 1600- meter runs and fourth in the shot put. Shauni Rutledge took third in the discus and shot put. Lauren MacArthur took third in the long jump and sixth in the high jump, and Shannon Browning placed fourth in the 100- and 400-meter dashes.

The Eagles 1600-meter relay team placed third, the 800-meter relay foursome took fifth, and the 400-meter relay group placed sixth.

Cedarville: Emily Feldhake won the discus with a throw of 95'7", and Rebecca Bickham placed second in the pole vault. Billie McLeod took second in the low hurdles, and Katie Bowlby placed fourth in the long jump.

The Trojans 400- and 3200- relay teams placed second and the 1600-relay group took fourth.

Brimley: Amber Aikens finished second in the 200-meter dash, Miranda Reattoir took third in the 800 and fifth in the 400, while Rachel Carruthers took third in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Miranda Rousseau placed third in the pole vault and fifth in the high hurdles, and Courtney Amble placed fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus.

The Bays 1600-meter relay team took second and the 800- relay foursome placed third.

DeTour: Nicole Melcer placed second in the high jump and sixth in the low hurdles. Amber Burton took third in the 3200, sixth in the high jump, and sixth in the 1600, and Danielle Weiman placed fifth in the 100-meter dash.

The Raiders 800-meter relay team took fourth and the 400- meter relay group finished fifth.

Rudyard: Alisha Thompson finished third in the pole vault, Ally Markstrom took fourth in the high jump, and Brittany Hoolsema placed sixth in the 800-meter relay.

The Bulldogs' 400-meter relay foursome placed fourth and the 3200-meter relay group took fifth.

Grayson Hood of Engadine won the 100-meter dash, high and low hurdles, and was a member of the Eagles' winning 400-meter relay team.
Mackinac Island: Michi Mullings finished sixth in the 100- meter dash for the Lakers.

BOYS DIVISION

North Central won the meet after totaling 109 points, followed by Cedarville with 65, Bloomingdale 63.5, Engadine and Brimley 60, Newberry 53.50, Rogers City 48, Pickford 35, Rudyard 29, DeTour 2, and Mackinac Island 1.

Cedarville: Justin Baker finished second in high and low hurdles, Kevin Thompson took second in the pole vault, and Sheldon Tassier placed third in the 1600- meter dash and fifth in the 3200- meter dash; Jordan Sweeney took third in the 800-meter and fifth in the 1600-meter race; Clayton Meyers placed fourth in the 800; and Jim Eberts took fifth in the low hurdles and sixth in the high hurdles.

The Trojans 3200-relay team took second, its 800- and 1600- metere relay foursomes placed fourth, and its 400-meter relay group finished fifth.

Engadine: Grayson Hood captured three events, winning the high hurdles in 15.55 seconds, the 100-meter dash in 11.63 seconds, and the low hurdles in 41.81 seconds for the Eagles.

The Eagles 400-relay team of Stefen Albright, Phillips Hood, Chris Keller, and Grayson Hood won in 47.87 seconds; Phillip Hood placed fifth in the 400-meter race; and Stefan Albright placed fifth in the long jump.

Brimley: The Bays 1600-meter relay team won in 3:52.00; Harlan Chartrand finished second in the 400 and 800; Ryan Freedman placed second in the 100 and 200; Ken Schwiderson took second in the 1600; T.J. McBribe took third in the pole vault; and Jordan Dillon placed third in the high hurdles.

Pickford: Jonah Hascall won the pole vault with a height of 10'3" and Scott Coullard took third in the 400, fourth in the 200, and sixth in the 100.

Nic Raden placed fourth in the 3200; placing fifth were Cody Stevenson in the high jump; Tony Stefanski in the pole vault, and Joe Jenkins in the shot put.

The Panthers 800- and 1600- relay teams took fifth and the 400- meter relay group took sixth.

Rudyard: Isiah Otten finished second in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600; Karl DeWitt took fourth in the high jump; Tony Falbo placed fourth in the long jump; Brady Burby placed sixth in the shot put; and Josh Carr finished sixth in the discus.

The Bulldogs 400-meter relay team took fourth and the 1600- relay foursome placed sixth.

DeTour: Stan Stocking placed sixth in the 3200-meter run for the Raiders.

Mackinac Island: Robert Chambers finished sixth in the 200-meter dash for the Lakers.
