How nice to have the windows open and let fresh air into the house. We finally have our spring weather.

Clean-up day for Garfield Township residents will be Saturday, May 12.

Newton Township is seeking bids for garbage removal and mowing. Bids must be submitted by mail by Wednesday, May 9, or hand delivered to any Newton Township board member.

The Newberry Eagles Auxiliary recently learned that the Roanoke Ridge, Virginia, Eagles Auxiliary 3772 is accepting donations in May for Virginia Tech University survivors and their families. John T. Bouchard Eagles Auxiliary 4701 will have donation cans at the Aerie during May for donations from the Newberry community and surrounding areas. The Eagles Club is on M-28, west of the airport. The Tahquamenon Area Friends of the Library are selling canvas book bags for $15 to purchase media cases. The library has a large selection of CD's and DVD's to be displayed. The CD's are a new item to check out, and will be available to the public soon. Some of the funds raised in the sale will be used for the hurricane-devastated Plaquamine Library in Louisiana.

"Pioneer Days" will be Saturday, June 23, in Manistique. There will be a lumberjack breakfast at Emerald City Espresso from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the craft show and flea market will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pioneer Park, next to the water tower. There will be musical entertainment throughout the day, and book signings by authors of "The U.P. Goes to War," "The Christmas Tree Ship," "So Cold A Sky," and "Tails in the Water Tower." The Chamber of Commerce quilt raffle and Ambassadors Club bake sale will follow. All proceeds will benefit the Schoolcraft County Historical Society.

Don't forget Mother's Day Sunday, May 13. Our mothers deserve a special day for all they do for us.

Happy birthday to Peggy Keller and Don McNeil, who share a birthday May 13, and Roland Ringquist May 15.

Best wishes to Jeff and Carole Keller, who will celebrate their wedding anniversary May 17.
