DeTour Area Spring has arrived in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. What a warm feeling it is to see the colorful spring flowers in bloom. Plans for the DeTour Botanical Garden are beginning to take place. Construction of a garden shed is about to begin; this project will be spearheaded by John Andree and Roger Norton. Other men in the community have volunteered their time to work on the shed project. During the winter months, time was spent soliciting for items for the garden. The response was overwhelming, and the Garden Club now has a new wheelbarrow, a garden cart, hand gardening tools, trellises, bird baths, wrought-iron table and chairs, bushes, perennials, and many other items. Members of the Garden Club have ordered many new trees and shrubs, along with new perennials and annuals. Many people unselfishly donated the needed articles. Garden work times are 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays. Memberships, donations, and volunteers are always needed to assist in maintaining the beauty of the gardens for the community and visitors. For more information, contact Kris Kelley at (906) 297-5071 or Norma Andree at (906) 297-5905. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 13. This is a special day to honor that very special person. A gift of flowers is always appreciated, as well as being treated to a meal outside of her kitchen. Another treat would be to invite her to the Kids Café performance of "Miss Edwina Jr." The performances will be Friday, May 11, Saturday, May 12, and a matinee Sunday, May 13. A dinner theater will be held Sunday before the performance starting at 2 p.m. Reservations are needed in advance. Friday and Saturday performances start at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday performance starts at 3 p.m. "Edwina" is directed by Dave Rhinard. Have a wonderful Mother's Day. Friends of the Library have announced the theme for the summer reading program at DeTour Library: "Get a Clue at Your Library." Patti Soule has volunteered to coordinate the program. If you're interested in helping with this program, call Patti at (906) 297-6390. The program is scheduled for six Tuesdays, from July 10 through August 14, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Daily activities will include stories read by the teacher, a craft, and a snack. Materials used will be appropriate for grades kindergarten through three, but preschoolers may also attend with an adult. Any parent or grandparent is welcome to stay to help with the crafts. Last summer, there was a record-breaking number of children attending. The staff is looking forward to their return, as well as new children to the program. Stop by the library and check out new books and their authors. Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The DeTour Area Schools honors banquet was held last week. The multi-purpose room in the school was filled with students and parents. The kitchen staff and helpers served 300 people dinner. Congratulations to all of the award recipients.
