Brevort Two dumpsters will be at the township building on Schoolhouse Road in Brevort Saturday, May 19, at 9 a.m. There will be a dumpster for scrap metal only, and one for other refuse. This is a service for Moran Township residents. Our condolences to the families of Catherine Lehto, Herman Rowley, and Reta Bentley. The vacant lot, where the old Brevort Resort once operated, and more recently Johnnie B's, will be the scene of a flea market this summer. Dale and Yvonne St. Andre will be operating the business. Dale is renovating the existing cottages for crafts people, antique dealers, and anyone who might have something interesting to sell or barter. There will be an occasional old-fashioned garage sale on the premises. Yvonne will be the primary shaker and mover. Dale comes from an old Naubinway family, as does Yvonne, a member of the King and Vallier families. Dale and Yvonne moved downstate to pursue a better job market. They have a home in Ortonville and a vacation home on the Hiawatha Club. Our small community welcomes a new business to add to our existing enterprises. We wish them good luck. Kathy Reid called early this morning to report a Baltimore oriole checking out her hummingbird feeder. She and Bob were prepared and hung a bright orange feeder out for the birds. It was only a short time later that the first hummingbird showed up. Chrissy Becker and her children, Jacob, Allen, and Danielle of Virginia Beach, Virginia, visited family in Cheboygan last week. Chrissy is the daughter-inlaw of Pega and John Kennedy of Brevort. John and Pega enjoyed the visit. Megan Gustafson is home from Michigan State University to spend the summer with her parents, Dick and Patsy Gustafson. Mary Ann and Larry First's grandson, Andy Vert, has been honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines. Happy birthday to Ellie Gliech May 3, and Matt Smith and Fred Jazmund May 9. Happy anniversary to Tom and Joyce Gustafson May 2. Congratulations to Kayley Lasley, who was graduated from Ferris State University with a degree in criminal justice. Joe and Sharon Chalmers spent Friday and Saturday golfing at the Hiawatha golf course with Randy Haas and his future daughter-inlaw. Helen Haas joined the group later for dinner. Sunday was a day to work on the Chalmers' deck. Sally Conklin made a quick trip to her home in Brevort this past weekend, then she's off to Florida to pick up her convertible. She'll be back in Brevort in July for an extended stay. Jim and Ann Dyer spent the weekend in Rapid River attending a Lions Club convention. Jackie and Denny Rippett motored to Marquette to meet their granddaughter, Cara Skovol of Houghton, for lunch. Mark and Brenda Spencer drove over Sunday afternoon with their new, red "fur traveling" truck. It's a lovely vehicle with room in the back seat for Mark to stretch out. There's lots of room for guys to travel to the fur markets. Jack and Thora Shepard have returned home from a three-week vacation in Kissimmee, Florida. Vacationing with them were Nita and Nickie Dumas of St. Ignace, and Barb Merchant and Jim Smith of Indian River. Sharon and Ken Smith are getting the Brevort Motel ready to open for the season. While at Chicago O'Hare airport, Eric Barthelemy happened to see Matt Roloff, one of the stars of the reality show "Little People, Big World." Eric told him that he and his family live in the same Upper Michigan town as Matt's in-laws, Gordon and Pat Knight. Eric got Matt's autograph for his wife, Marilee, a great fan of the show. What fun. It is a great show. Take great care, and please don't burn anything outdoors until the Department of Natural Resources can safely give permits to burn. A great disaster was averted this weekend as a careless fire got underway from a property owner and started to spread to neighboring 40-acre parcels of valuable woodlots, hunting camps, and vacation cottages. Fire departments from St. Ignace and Hudson and Hendricks townships were quickly on the scene, as were the Department of Natural Resources and Forest Service. The fire was contained, and damage held to a minimum. It was very scary as it was so dry, and the wind had been blowing from the east for days. All volunteers involved did a professional job. Have a safe week. Take a walk. Bird watch. |
