St. Ignace
By Miriam Blair 643-7994

First of all, I'd like to thank all of you readers for your wonderful compliments.

Our new American Legion Memorial Park has been a popular site as families stop by and children enjoy the playground. What a nice place to picnic, or just sit down and take in the scenery.

Jennifer Jarman spent a few days visiting her grandparents, Peg and Skip Jarman. She is a resident of Calumet, and a student at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. En route home, she spent a day at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, visiting friends.

A meeting was held Wednesday, May 9, at McDonald's restaurant in St. Ignace concerning a date for reopening The Touch of Craft. The shop will be accepting items Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will open for business Monday, June 11, at 9:30 a.m. If you're a crafter 55 years or older, and would like to join in, please stop by. The shop is located on the Arnold Line dock.

Belated birthday wishes to Norma Emery May 9. George Shooster will celebrate his 50th birthday May 12. Another young lady, Gladys Pomeroy, will celebrate her birthday May 18. Happy Birthday!

Condolences to the family of Reta Bentley. A very well-known family they are, and Bentley's Cafe was always a big hangout for students, especially during the 1960s. Even though it's under new management, it holds the same atmosphere. It's known as a place for a good, home-cooked meal, or just pie and coffee.

Gros Cap fifth and sixth grade students had earned money by bake sales, pizza sales, and donation scratch-off cards for camp. The students left by bus Monday morning for Clear Lake, down past Charlevoix. They will return home Wednesday. Gros Cap teacher Amy Lester went along as advisor, then a camp counselor will take over. Activities will include such fun as canoeing and wall climbing. Good job.

Dustin Wilcox, business owner of U.P. In Smoke Barbecue, attended a local food service class. The seminar was held at Timmy Lee's Pub in St. Ignace, with Nancy Labor as the guest speaker. Safe handling of food is very important, not only in a business, but even in homes. Tim and Diana Lee, new business owners, treated the group of 25 to breakfast, lunch, and snacks, which was very much appreciated.

Sergeant Lawrence McQuiston has returned home from Indiana after two weeks of military school. Sgt. McQuiston previously served in Iraq in the National Guard.

It's all about mud in St. Ignace Saturday, May 19, as the Chamber of Commerce is holding its first mud run. The event will take place near Little Bear East Arena. The day starts out with ATV's, then trucks of all types and sizes compete in each class for distance and time. Most drivers are experienced, but I understand for a couple of people this will be their first time out. Refreshments will be available, as well as T-shirts on sale and a "jumpstart" fun house for children. Janet Peterson of the Chamber has worked hard on this event and is getting excited to see just what it's all about. Many other volunteers have worked for the last few months to have this event up to standards. We're hoping for good weather and a lot of spectators Saturday.

Gros Cap School will hold an annual picnic Thursday, May 24. The playground will be filled with games starting at 9 a.m. Lunch will follow about 11 a.m. Parents and grandparents are invited to attend.

Edwyna Nordstrom has returned to St. Ignace after having spent the winter with her daughter, Lynda Wheat, in Overland Park, Kansas.
