Les Cheneaux
By Helen Shoberg 484-2626 mink1@cedarville.net

Current Les Cheneaux Lions Club members (from left) Ed Pavey and Leroy Pieri talk with longtime former Lion Tony Autore of Cedarville during the club's 60th anniversary celebration at Northwoods Christian Camp in Pickford. Mr. Autore was recognized for 25 years of perfect attendance during the event Monday night, May 14.
A needed rain fell last week, greening things quickly and making the grass shoot out of the ground. Mowing is one of the things that I can't do; between my neighbor, Kate Ter Haar, and my family, it does get done.

Anote from Barbara Brewer told that she and Jim have been watching a white robin near their home on Hill Island. There was a picture of an albino robin in The St. Ignace News last week. Barb also said that they saw a rather large bobcat come through their yard one morning, a bit of a scary sight for her. Seeing the wildlife in the Les Cheneaux Islands is one of the nice things about living here.

Yvonne McDonald won the $100 Lions Club raffle May 15.

Les Rouge Chapeau chapter of the Les Cheneaux Red Hats had a nice luncheon in Goetzville last Tuesday. The proprietor of the Goetzville Bar decorated the tables with Red Hat memorabilia and it was a feast for the eyes, as well as the palate. The ladies enjoyed sharing a birthday cake in honor of Liz Soderlund and her sister, Carole Hooper. Liz and her sister share the same birthday, although a few years apart. Carole turned 65. A cake made by Sue Rye was decorated as an authentic Medicare card, with everything but Carole's Social Security number.

It was nice to talk to Sam and Marjory Hansen last weekend, who were here with their daughter and son-in-law, Barry and Sue Hague, to open their Marquette Island cottage.

The Arts Council of Les Cheneaux has just announced the summer art classes schedule with a new category, photography, to be taught by Linda Henderson of Cadogan Point. Linda, an awardwinning photographer, will offer three classes, one for beginning photographers, one class for more advanced, and another class in creativity.

Other classes to be offered are a beginners pottery class in June by Jerry Reid and another pottery class in July for those who have done some pottery. A watercolor class for intermediate and advanced painters will be taught by Betsy Boehmer, and an intermediate to advanced class in oil painting by Roger Heuck. Registration is required. For more information, call Peggy Patrick at 484-3069, Margaret Pavey at 484-3559, or for the watercolor class, Gerry Adams at 484- 3923.

A suggested donation can be made to the Arts Council of $20 for class fees to be reduced.

Our high school seniors will soon be graduated and they will certainly have left behind many happy memories for all of us. It is a wonderful class of exceptional students, musicians, artists, and athletes. Congratulations, good wishes, and God bless to all. We shall miss you.

I wonder how many people realize that this will be the 75th class to be graduated from Cedarville High School. The very first class to be graduated from Cedarville High School was in 1932. Before that date, Cedarville students who wished to go through grade 12 had to go to Sault Ste. Marie High School or Pickford to finish their high school education.

It was nice to be included in the Les Cheneaux Lions Club 60th anniversary dinner last week at Northwoods Camp south of Pickford. Con was a member of the early Lions Club in Les Cheneaux when it was first formed through the sponsorship of the Pickford Lions. It was a lovely dinner, served by the Northwoods Camp staff and attended by members of both Les Cheneaux and Pickford clubs.
