Brevort Dave came in from a ride in the woods and asked me if I remembered the story of the forget-menots on the roads north of Brevort. When Harley Hagen was fighting cancer, he and Louise took the same ride back through the woods. Harley would sit in the passenger seat tossing out forget-me-not seeds they had collected the previous summer. That was more than 20 years ago, and the forget-menots have spread a carpet of blue for a great distance for all travelers of back roads to enjoy. We're reminded of Harley and Louise during the blooming of forget-menots. The village flea market was humming with activity this past weekend with a few tables set up with items new and used, some antiques, and furniture. The bakery was open featuring homemade bread, cookies, apple dumplings, and fudge. The baked goods are made at a licensed establishment and brought in. Andy and Sue Eskelinen of Macomb, who have a vacation spot on Big Brevort Lake, came in with a truck full of flats of annuals, pots of geraniums, and hanging baskets, for which all proceeds go to "Homes for our Troops," a Michigan organization helping troops when they come home from active duty serving our country. The total sale of flowers is tax deductible. Sue was making a list of other flowers they can bring next year. The village was busy. I hope it's a sign of things to come. Condo Association East had its annual meeting Saturday, May 26, at Trinity Fellowship Hall. All but three units were represented. Sharon and Joe Chalmers entertained Pat Claramunt and Jackie Liguzinski at breakfast Monday morning. Please keep Todd Backus, formerly of St. Ignace and Brevort, in your thoughts and prayers as he deals with a recurrence of brain cancer. It was more than six years ago that Todd was first diagnosed with cancer. He was fortunate to have a doctor trained to deal with such tumors. His operation was a success, and Todd has been cancer free and has been working, playing golf, and traveling. Now it's back, but not with the vengeance of the first siege. He has undergone the first series of treatments and has some time off before the next treatment starts. He sounded good when we talked to him Sunday evening. He had just mowed the yard and trimmed some shrubs. He is still working. Jake Weiss was honored with an open house at the home of his grandmother, Theresa Davis, Saturday afternoon, May 26. Aunts, uncles, and cousins from Flint, Brighton, Traverse City, Brevort Lake, Brevort, and Wisconsin, as well as St. Ignace, were in attendance to salute Jake on his academic and athletic achievements at LaSalle High School. Classmates and friends called and enjoyed food and memories of 2007. Karen Southfield entertained friends earlier this week at her condominium. Allen Southfield arrived for the weekend with the couple's granddaughter, Alex, who was a delight to talk with as she answered the telephone when I called Monday morning. At the Allen/Dotts compound on the north shore of Big Brevoort Lake this weekend were Ruby and Jim Allen, Heidi and Denny Fischer and their daughter, Isabella, of Flint, Vern and Linda Dotts, Jeremy Dotts, Rachael Beckley and her son, Andrew, and Nichole Dotts and her daughter, Elena, all of Flint. Charlie and Pam Movalson, along with their daughter, Chrissy, and son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Lisa Movalson, spent the weekend at their cottage on Lake Michigan in Brevort. The guys did some fishing, and the girls shopped in Mackinaw City. Roy and Marilyn DuMond and Joe and Deb Berry with their children, Joey and Marilyn, drove to St. Ignace to attend Jake Weiss's open house, as did Gloria and Rick Weber of Brevort Lake. Tom and Taffy Coffey of Owosso are at their home in Brevort. Tom had his antique shop open this week. I saw Sally Conklin putting up window boxes at her condominium. They brighten up a place nicely. Ann Dyer's sister-in-law, Ruth Buschert, and her sons and two grandchildren of Grand Rapids visited with Jim and Ann Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May 26. Morgan and Kristi Gustafson spent Sunday night with their grandparents, Tom and Joyce Gustafson. This morning the girls are painting gourds for a martin house. Two gourds are already occupied with martins, the ultimate mosquito eaters. Les and Mike Jorgensen have launched their sailboat in Muskegon and are sailing for Brevort via the marina in St. Ignace. We hope for good winds. Rob and Melissa Berry of California are visiting with Rob's parents, Bob and Ellen Berry, of the village. Their son, Kevin Berry from Wisconsin, and Leah Berry, who was just graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, completed the group for the weekend. The O'Boyle family spent a quiet Memorial Day weekend at home. They have their garden planted, and Janice says the pear and apple trees are loaded with blossoms this year. Lawrence O'Boyle spent a night with Ben Idalski and took in the movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." The boys gave the movie four thumbs up. Shirley Mitchinson and family and Dr. Greg and Dawn Mitchinson and family spent time at their cottage on Worth Road this past week. Jim Rose wasn't planning on too much this holiday; no marching with the flag, and he didn't even fire off the gun in the backyard. Ernie and Paula Gustafson are enjoying a few days at their cottage on the Gustafson camp property. They've launched their pontoon on Big Brevoort Lake and have been doing some serious fishing. Happy belated birthday to Kelli Movalson May 25. Happy birthday to Eric Movalson May 30 and Tyler Barthelemy June 2. Happy 30th anniversary to Mark and Brenda Spencer. |
