I hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend, and the many graduation parties that were held, and will be ongoing for the next few weekends around the area. Please be sure to drive safely, and while traveling, turn your headlights on.

The Upper Peninsula Single District 10 Lions Club is collecting used computer ink cartridges, with the exception of Epson, to help raise money for the 2007 Curtis Independence Day parade. Cartridges may be placed in designated boxes at the Fish and Hunt Shop, Curtis Elementary School, Manistique Lakes Clinic, State Savings Bank in Curtis, Naubinway, and Manistique, Jack's Supervalue in Manistique, Newberry High School, and First National Bank of St. Ignace Newberry branch office. The Newberry United Methodist Church will have a fish fry Friday, June 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the church at 110 West Harrie Street. Takeouts will be available. The suggested donation is $7.

The U.P. Regional Blood Center, a service of Marquette General Hospital, will hold a blood drive Wednesday, June 6, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. For an appointment, call Ruth Dake at (906) 293-5062.

The 58th Annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival, celebrating Mackinac's lilac collection, will take place Friday, June 8, through Sunday, June 17.

Engadine Historical Society's annual meeting will be Thursday, June 14, at 7 p.m. at the Freeman- Hasting House Museum. Election of three trustees for three-year terms will be decided.

The annual Engadine Heritage Day will be held at Garfield Township Hall and the Mill Pond Park and Pavilion in Engadine Sunday, July 22.

The annual Curtis Community Arts Council wine and cheese tasting and auction fundraiser will be Saturday, July 28, at Chamberlin's Ole Forest Inn in Curtis. For more information, contact Kelly Chamberlin at (906) 586-6000.

The Freeman-Hastings House and Fenskey Log House Museums are now open every Tuesday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to visit. The museums are located on West Melville Street in Engadine.
