Marianna 'Nan' Paquin

Marianna "Nan" Paquin of St. Ignace was a 20-year teacher aide with St. Ignace Area Schools, from which she retired in 1997. She also worked for many years in her family's restaurants in the St. Ignace area, the most recent of which was the Flame, a restaurant her father built.

Mrs. Paquin died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. She was 75.

She was born in St. Ignace October 8, 1931, to James B. and Mary (nee Durkalic) Massaway Sr. She was graduated from LaSalle High School in St. Ignace, and afterward worked in the family restaurant business for many years.

She married Frederick E. Paquin at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace April 16, 1953. She was member of St. Ignatius and the Altar Society, and a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Mrs. Paquin is survived by her son, Fred J. Paquin of St. Ignace; three daughters and their families, Linda and Bruce Bigger of St. Ignace, Mary Paquin of St. Ignace, and Cathy Edwards and Jim Hettel of St. Ignace; two sisters and their families, Lois and Jerry Boring and Ruth Massaway of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Massaway of St. Ignace; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Paquin of St. Ignace; nine grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died November 20, 1981; her parents; two brothers, James Jr. and Wally Massaway; a sister, Pat Caskey; a sister-in-law, Nan Massaway, and a great-grandson, Jonathon Gugin.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, May 25, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Father Norbert Landreville and Deacon Don Olmstead officiated. Burial was in St. Ignatius Cemetery in St. Ignace.

Pallbearers were Joe Paquin, Bruce Bigger, David Bigger, John Gugin, Adam Gugin, Steven Davenport, and Rich Cullen.

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Police Department and Michigan State Police served as honor guards.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.
