1st Brevort Lake Walleye Derby To Be Held June 2

The first Brevort Lake Walleye Derby will take place from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2. The event will help promote Moran businesses and support the Straits Area Sportsmen's Club's efforts to replenish the fish population in Brevort Lake, said event coordinator Kirk Lipnitz.

"The fish are back and the fishing is good again in Brevort Lake," said Mr. Lipnitz.

Some proceeds will go toward the Sportsmen's Club, which has made efforts to restore Brevort Lake's walleye population.

The Sportsmen's Club has created and placed more than 20 cribs for fish spawning and has been involved with controlling the cormorant population, which anglers say affects the fish population in Brevort Lake.

So far, 25 teams have registered for the derby, and more may register on the day of the event. Mr. Lipnitz is encouraging teams to register as soon as possible to avoid any delays in starting the derby.

Those interested can register at King's Fish Market and Bradford's Gas and Grocery on M-123, and also at True Value hardware, both in Moran and in St. Ignace.

The registration deadline is Friday, June 1. Registration is $100 per two-person team.

Participants can launch at the Dukes Road boat launch and any other access points, however, they must remember to register before the event begins. A flare gun will signal the start of the tournament.

There will be two registration tables, one at the Dukes Road boat launch and one just across the canal near the boat launch. Both registration areas will be marked with signs.

The one-day event includes cash prizes for the top four, twoperson teams. One team can win a 2007 Arctic Cat four-wheeler if a specially tagged fish is caught.

First place winners will receive $1,200, while second place will receive $750, third place $500, and fourth place $250.

A silent auction, fish fry, and pig roast will take place between True Value and King's Fish Market in Moran on the day of the derby. The silent auction, which includes golf packages, fishing charter trips, and airplane rides, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Brevort Township Community Foundation.
