Brevort
By Lois Movalson 292-5581

Condolences to Anita Dumas of St. Ignace. Her daughter, Nicki Fritz of St. Ignace, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, June 2. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dodson Funeral Home. The service will be at the Methodist Church in St. Ignace Wednesday at 11 a.m.

I especially enjoyed talking with Rose McGregor last weekend. She is a faithful Tiger fan, as I am, and her favorite Tiger is Magglio Ordonoz, as is mine. Who would have thought?

While walking through the flea market Saturday, I happened to meet an old acquaintance, Mary Ellen Stephenson, of the Rexton area. She and David got to talking of picking the "Princess Pine" way back when to augment your income, it was a way for the whole family to make a little more money in the spring and fall. Axel Movalson and Ellis Movalson would buy greens and then ship the bales off to market. They were used primarily for wreaths and floral arrangements. Sometimes it was looked upon as drudge work, picking greens in the woods, but Ms. Stephenson had a smart retort: "Oh no, we are in the lycopodium business." That would usually quiet them.

Dave still has the scale that his grandfather would weigh the greens on. He was very smart, as he knew just how much a bag or bale would weigh, and sometimes he would find rocks, bricks, and even smelt stuffed in the middle to boost up the weight, making it worth more money. There are still lots of greens or Princess Pines in the woods.

Dave noticed an ad in a newspaper for lycopodium just a few years ago. It is also known as "ground pine."

Minnie Gustafson, a former Brevort business woman, is in an assisted living/nursing home in Cape Coral, Florida. Drop her a card care of 1331 Santa Barbara Boulevard, Cape Coral, Florida 33991.

Bev Pennington will spend some of the summer at the summer home in Irons. Her daughters, Tara and Leslie, are running marathons for the Leukemia/ Lymphoma Society. Tara is the top fundraiser in Michigan.

Randy and Helen Haas entertained Joe and Sharon Chalmers at their condominium Friday. Not very good weather for golfing, their favorite activity these lengthening summer days, but we need the rain.

Sally Conklin was a front porch visitor Wednesday. It just happened Dave took some smoked whitefish off the smoker, so she was able to take lunch home with her.Tracy Movalson and Chippy left for Wisconsin Wednesday after a week's stay with us. Pat was due back on Thursday after another three-week business trip to China.

Ann and Jim Dyer attended a meeting of past district Lions governors in St. Ignace Saturday evening.

Jerri Rose joined all the other Jewels of the North Red Hats this past weekend for the annual convention at the Little Bear East Arena. Many events were scheduled, much to the enjoyment of the many participants from far and wide.

Les Jorgenson and his brother, Mike, sailed their boats up to St. Ignace this week. It was perfect sailing weather. Owen had new recorders, so while they were all out sailing Lake Michigan they were making beautiful music, which they recorded on a compact disc. This Monday morning Mr. Jorgenson called from Leland on his way home.

This time of year we usually get a bat or two in this old house. Last night, one flew through the living room. Dave and I have the "bat drill" down pat. Turn on all the lights in the house and open the door to the dark night, and they will fly out in a flash. No more chasing them with a broom.

Denny Rippett is getting impatient with his rhubarb. I only gave him those little roots this spring. He has watered them faithfully, but they only grow so much each day. They are not quite eight to 10 inches long, or as big around as his thumb.

I haven't picked mine for more than a week, so I will share when I pick later today.

Sharon Smith broke her middle toe, striking a chair leg. She will find out this week from an orthopedic doctor what needs to be done.

Orv Kabat lead the worship service at Trinity last Sunday. Jerry and Janice Hoover and the grandchildren were in the congregation and Mr. Kabat mentioned that he hadn't prepared a children's sermon, but thought maybe he could talk a little about mathematics when one of the grandchildren piped up and said, "I just got out of school" in a rather indignant tone of voice. It brought the house down.

Sean and Janice O'Boyle and family, Katelyn, Kyle, and Lawrence, ventured to the lake up north in Canada for some fishing. They drove northwest of WaWa, and rode a train for two and a half hours to a resort on a lake, where they enjoyed catching walleyes and a few pike. It was a successful three days of great fishing. Pat O'Boyle and son, Ryan, joined the party. They saw a moose and the weather was quite warm.

Lawrence O'Boyle is going to give Mary Carney at the First Edition book store a hand, going through books and alphabetizing them. Mr. O'Boyle is an avid reader.

Happy birthday to Kyle Lasley June 9 and Mallory LaLonde June 10. Happy Anniversary to Jim and Ann Dyer June 7, Make and Jody Gustafson June 12, and Larry and Sharon Lasley June 13.

Please keep Anita Dumas in your prayers this week.
