Community volunteers helped Forest Service workers clean up the St. Ignace Ranger District of the Hiawatha National Forest Saturday, May 12. Volunteers collected 14 tires, several dump truck loads of building materials like shingles, masonry blocks, roofing, several couches, plastics, foam, and household garbage.

Efforts were concentrated around Castle Rock Road, Black Point Road, and Kenneth Road.

"It never fails that we find trash on this and other spur roads, especially the roads closest to villages and towns," said Kari Vanderheuel of the St. Ignace Ranger District. "Absent this year from the clean up were large metal items such as appliances and cars. This may be because scrap metal prices are high."

This was the 11th annual cleanup day for the forest district.
