POLICE REPORTS Two men were taken into federal custody on suspicion of carrying improper immigration documents and one was sent home on a bus after police were called to a St. Ignace motel Sunday, May 27, on suspicion of the men encouraging the motel's foreign female workers to flee with them. St. Ignace City Police and an officer from the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians assisted federal officers. The motel supervisor told police that five of her Mexican workers had left in a vehicle a week previously and had not come back, in violation of the workers' United States Citizenship and Immigration Services temporary work visa. When three Mexican men rented a room in cash, the supervisor became suspicious and called federal officers from Sault Ste. Marie, whom she had also contacted in the previous incident. Police checked the background of each man and the registration of their vehicle, which was registered to a person in Ohio, but was not reported stolen. The third man was directed to take a bus home, since he did not have a valid driver's license. The man said he will have the owner of the vehicle return to pick up the vehicle. A 30-year-old Pickford woman was arrested for operating a vehicle that caused an accident involving two parked cars on Huron Trail in Evergreen Shores Sunday evening, May 27. The woman, accompanied by a passenger, told police she did not have her lights on when she struck the two cars after leaving a bar. Hearing the wreck, one of the property owners involved ran to the driver and took the keys out of the ignition when the two women allegedly attempted to flee the scene. The driver was treated at Mackinac Straits Hospital for a laceration on her arm, thought to have been caused by deployment of the air bag. She was later lodged at the Mackinac County Jail. Michigan State Police A 27-year-old St. Ignace woman was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence after she rolled her vehicle onto property on Portage Road early Sunday morning, May 27. Police reported the woman, who was accompanied by five passengers, sped up and allegedly attempted to flee as a patrol car passed her late that evening. The driver lost control of the vehicle as she tried to make a corner, rolling the vehicle into a driveway. Police reported no damage to the property. All people in the car received minor injuries. Another accident happened that night when a vehicle driven by a St. Ignace youth ran off Smith Road. Five youths were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The incident is still under investigation, as the driver failed to report the accident. Police are also investigating a false police report given by the owner of the vehicle, who told police the vehicle was stolen. Police stated alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. |
