DeTour Area
By Barbara Buschbacher 297-8075 bbann@sault.com

A week of special activities begins this Friday, June 29, with the DeTour Area Community Choir performing its spring concert at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7 p.m.

The EUP Fine Arts Council has planned its second annual Art Festival to be held Saturday, June 30, on Ontario Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is being cosponsored with the Les Cheneaux Area Artisan Cooperative. Festival Chairperson Nancy Mordecai announced more than 40 artists will be participating. In addition, there will be music throughout the day by local musicians, children's activities, and luncheon specials (outside and inside) prepared by local restaurants. In case of inclement weather, the DeTour Chamber of Commerce pavilion has been reserved.

On Sunday, July 1, another popular event, sponsored by the DeTour Chamber of Commerce, will be the Freighter Races. Registration is at 1 p.m., and race time is 2 p.m. This event takes place on Ontario Street by the Mainsail Restaurant.

The schedule for Tuesday, July 3, includes the DeTour 5k race with registration between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the pavilion, with race time at 6:30 p.m. The annual Ice Cream Social at the Union Presbyterian Church will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. After the social, a dance will take place at the pavilion with music provided by Gary VanAlstine and the Main Street Band.

The July 4 parade starts at noon Wednesday. Line up for the parade will be on Sims Street and Ontario. After the parade, afternoon activities will be held at the pavilion. The Arts and Crafts show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The food and beverage concession will be available at 1 p.m. Raffle drawings will commence at 3 p.m., with the big drawing at 4 p.m. The ever-popular horseshoe contest will take place at the pavilion.

The annual children's races will again be conducted by Red Adams. There will be a new addition this year for the children, a carnival. Refreshments, cotton candy, and snow cones will be available. Donations to help defray the costs can be made out to the DeTour Area Schools and mailed to Deb Fountain in DeTour.

Fireworks will be held at dusk at the Shula Giddens Park.

The parrot in the cage, seen in different locations in the village, just might be a clue that involves the summer theater production in DeTour. Could this parrot be part of the cast?

Food for thought: Sandwich every bit of criticism between two layers of praise.
