We're sending warmest and best wishes to a dear friend to Mackinac, Aileen Koehler, who has been ill at her home in California. Friends may write to her at the following address: 417 Santa Domingo Drive, Solana Beach, California 92075. Mrs. Koehler's maiden name was Poole, and her family were former owners of the Iroquois Hotel. She and her late husband, Dr. Larry Koehler, later owned the beautiful Edgecliffe Cottage on the West Bluff, now owned by the Barr family. Dr. Koehler was a great cook who prepared wonderful luncheons, to which many of us were invited. Aileen and the Poole family were lifelong members of Little Stone Church.

We have a good friend in Delta, Ohio, Ann Taylor, longtime guest of the Windermere, who comes several times during the season. Ann is recovering from major surgery and we wish her a speedy recovery. Ann has a great time in the fall, doing her Christmas shopping.

He is the owner of his late uncle, O.W. Lang's, wonderful boat and Mackinac pictures. Here's some happy news: Saturday evening, June 23, 12 members of the National Guard had dinner at the Village Inn. At the same time, an older gentleman and his wife were also having dinner. When the soldiers got ready to pay their check, the older couple had paid the whole bill. Turning to the gentleman, they said, "Thank you very much." The man replied, "No, thank you very much for your service." What a kind and wonderful tribute it was to those serving our country.

Seeing Doud's Market delivery wagon in the Lilac Parade brought to mind a story of long ago.

My late husband, Robert, was a delivery boy for his father, James. The old white horse was hitched to a colorful Doud Mercantile wagon. This day it was Robert's duty to be on the early run to visit the cottagers and take the orders of the day.

Years ago there was competition in the grocery business, between Doud Mercantile and the J.W. Davis store. This day Robert stopped at the Milton Tootle cottage, and was told by the cook that he was late and she had given her order to the Davis store. Needless to say, he was sad. As he was about to leave, a very sweet, soft-spoken lady, Mrs. Tootle, called to him. She said, "Good morning, Robert," and invited him to sit down because she wanted to give him an order. He often said that it was so large that he almost had writer's cramp. Just a happy ending to a story many years ago.

Brother Jim Boynton will soon arrive and will spend the month of July and part of August helping at Ste. Anne's. Happy birthday to Brother Jim July 3.

Lenny McCabe and his family will arrive Sunday, July 22, to visit Karen McCabe at her cottage at British Landing.

The past weekend was so beautiful, with weather we will always remember. It was picture-perfect, warm, sunny, and comfortable. At least 13 brides chose Mackinac for their wedding day. Services were held in the various churches and outside on the lawns of hotels. The wedding carriages were kept busy getting the happy brides to their weddings on time. It truly was like a storybook to see the brides with their flowing gowns happily riding by.

Our Mackinac Island Medical Center was kept very busy over the weekend, treating patients who had various accidents. We are fortunate to have a skilled medical team.

Assisting Father Rey Garcia with the summer Masses at Ste. Anne's is Father Reno, a Jesuit from Madagascar. We give him a warm welcome.

Last week, I was invited by Buck and Alice Sharrow to go on a scenic carriage ride with them around the Island. The day was perfect, the company the best, and the scenery picturesque and beautiful. Charlie and Willie were the handsome hackney team that answered to all of Buck's commands.

What fun and relaxation we all enjoyed. The drive took us in front of Grand Hotel with its wonderful gardens. Next came the West Bluff cottages with their magnificent view of the Straits of Mackinac, then the lovely homes in Hubbard's Annex with their colorful gardens. We drove through Woodbluff and Stonecliffe Manor, and the area was blanketed with wild daisies and yellow buttercups.

Down Forest Way to Lakeshore Drive, we saw all of the homes in Stonebrook. It was a wonderful ride.

I appreciated the thoughtfulness of my good friends, Alice and Buck, for a wonderful day. Even though we live here year-around, we never get tired of its beauty.
