DeTour Area
By Barbara Buschbacher 297-8075 bbann@sault.com

The month of July arrived with sunny blue skies. What a great time of year, especially the celebration of America's favorite holiday, July 4. Seeing the beautiful flags wave in the breeze brings out the patriotism in each one of us.

The DeTour Community Choir featured patriotic songs honoring our armed forces in its concert. The concert held last Friday evening was one of the best ever presented by the choir. The performance started with the presentation of colors by the Raber AMVets. After the colors were posted, the choir and the audience sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Director Jean Bloom was happy to introduce two of the three DeTour school students, Korin Goetz (trumpet) and Sarah Reed, (saxophone) who will be attending Blue Lake music camp this summer, sponsored by the EUP Fine Arts Council. The third student, Ashley LaPoint, will attend for fine art. Both music students performed solos. The total gift amount for the scholarships combined is $2,000. The money for the scholarships is from those who have donated at concerts.

Barbara Taylor selected as her solo "Love That Man of Mine" from the musical "Showboat." Members of the bass section, with their beautiful voices, sang "Ol' Man River," also from "Showboat." Sandy Pumphrey performed an aria. The performance of the soloists were exceptional. Dave Rhinard and Hayley Weston sang a duet. The ensembles were all outstanding.

The end of the concert, "The Pride of America," brought tears to everyone as "Uncle Sam" (also known as Dave Rhinard) paid tribute to every branch of the Armed Forces. It was with great pride that our veterans of each branch stood and were recognized.

Choir members diligently attended rehearsals. In the soprano section: Paula Bardsley, Serena Forgrave, Helen Hine, Mary Hagan, Norma Landerville, Jan Nye, Georgia Potter, Sandy Pumphjrey, Jackie Sagear. In the alto section; Anna Aben, Connie Baldwin, Jennie Brussow, Cindy Dudeck, Jerri Galarowic, Julia Meier, Betty Selvius, Donna Stoetzer, Sandy Straksis, Mary Volkers, Olive Warner. Tenor section: Bob Bloom, Merwin Crampton, Gerald Goodrich, Don Stoetzer, Bob Vaught, Nelda Vaught, Moira "Pat" Wilson. Bass section: Charlie Hine, Nick Meier, Frederick Payment, David Rhinard, Garret Vermeulen, John Witten. The ever faithful accompanist was Pat Kemp. This is one concert that will long be remembered.

The next day was the second annual DeTour Village Fine Art Festival featuring the works of 36 local and regional artists and musicians. The festival is free and is sponsored by the EUP Fine Arts Council and Les Cheneaux Area Artisan Cooperative. The fair was well attended and everyone enjoyed the beautiful, sunny day. Well done.

News from the Caribou Lake Association: Carol Hiney will be the new newsletter editor. Election of officers will take place at the July 5 meeting. On the slate: Jeff Hiney, president; David Kurtis, vice president; Diane Karsh, treasurer; Joan McCloud, secretary. Trustees: Jack Pitko, Jim Pitko, Fran Goetz, Steve Tyler, Joe Matazinskas.

The Gallaghers thank everyone for the warm welcome they received from residents of Caribou Lake. The Gallaghers, who recently moved from Crossville, Tennessee, are now the owners of Anchor Inn Resort (formerly Eric's Resort).

Food for thought: Consideration for others may mean taking a wing instead of a drumstick.
