Brevort My brother, Ed Heenan, is here from Austin, Texas, for two weeks. He is a new grandpa. His daughter Megan, and her husband, Ed Eicker, of Evanston, Illinois, presented him with a perfect baby grandson, Austin William Eicker, born Saturday, June 16. Congratulations to all. Sally Conklin stopped by this week, wanting me to come have an ice cream cone. Afterwards, we sat on the front porch and had a nice gab session. Pastor Tari Stage-Harvey announced in church Sunday that if the Hope Chest thrift store in St. Ignace didn't get at least three volunteers from Trinity Lutheran Church, she was going to have to do the "chicken dance." This week Joyce Gustafson, Gail Lamoreaux, Jerri Rose, Jackie Rippett, Sharon Smith, and Dave and I had all signed up for duties on various days of the week. No chicken dance for Pastor Tari. Dave and I arrived at the Hope Chest Thursday to familiarize ourselves with what we would be doing. Connie Litzner gave us the grand tour and explained the workings of the organization. We were impressed with the scope of different articles offered for sale for the community. The quality of the items is clean and gently used clothing, household items, and furniture. A limit of 10 articles has been established, to be fair to all buyers. Anyone can shop, as there is no criteria as to financial ability. Shoppers are appreciated, as proceeds benefit charities like the St. Ignace Food Pantry. Charlie and Pam Movalson and Chrissy Movalson are spending the holiday at their cottage on Lake Michigan. Andy and Lisa Movalson are expected Tuesday. There will be some serious fishing on Big Brevoort as both Movalson families have new boats. Fishing is the main objective when they're up north. Joe and Sharon Chalmers drove to Wisconsin to do clothes shopping for a planned jazz cruise in January. Joe made a birdie and par in one round while playing golf this past weekend. Sharon had all she could do to stay on the fairway. She told me that herself. Barb and Owen Jorgensen entertained guests from California this week. Ed and Doris Eisenstein and their son, Jeremy, and his wife, Caroline, enjoyed a week of fine weather, good food, and conversations lasting into the morning hours. Mike and Melanie Jorgensen along with children, Matt and Melissa, joined them. Mike and Melanie have their sailboat at the marina in St. Ignace. Karen Southland is hosting her mother, Jean Fogelson, this week as well as her son, Will, from Phoenix, Arizona. Allen Southland will be arriving for the Fourth of July holiday. While walking the beach west of the village, Jim and Kathy Christopher heard some rustling in the brush. A black bear emerged, obviously not interested in beach walkers, as there was no altercation. Pat and Gordon Knight have been at their summer home on Wildwood for a few weeks. They're disappointed in the green slime in Lake Michigan, as we all are. Sometimes it drifts away, then comes back. Their daughter is Amy Rollof of the "Little People, Big World" reality program on the Learning Channel. She and her husband, Matt, along with their family, have had their lives chronicled for the past two years. Amy was home last March, and was asked to give a talk at her alma mater, Central Michigan University. She was reluctant at first, having not thought of herself as a public speaker, but she did agree and spoke to a packed Warriner Hall at Central Michigan University. There were more than 500 people waiting outside. "Little People, Big World" is being shown Monday evenings during the summer. Jackie and Denny Rippett enjoyed the parade in Curtis Sunday, July 1. They joined Rachael and Roy Gibson for a potluck dinner after the parade. Rachael is an artist of great repute, and is now working on making gourd snowmen. She is a crafter of historical dolls and other art forms. She has a shop in Curtis. A few weeks ago, Ken Smith fell down a flight of steps in Argentina, where he is employed. He is still getting treatment for what seemed to be a minor injury. We all hope he gets better soon. To occupy her time, Sharon is stripping their English Tudor dining room furniture they had shipped from England when Ken was stationed there in the U.S. Navy. Eight chairs are done, and now Sharon is working on the table. Thora and Jack Shepard are attending the summer ballgames of Tucker and Tessa Shepard. Jack and Thora spent Thursday afternoon at the housewarming of Tate and Waynitta Hakola of Rudyard. Tate is the son of the former Susie Pemble of the city, and a subcontractor for Shepard Forestry. Jack and Thora have been at the cottage at Trout Lake. Jim Smith and Barbara Merchant of Indian River spent the weekend with the Shepards. Beth and Rob Logan of Prescott called on Pega and John Kennedy Saturday, June 30. They're camping in the area and Beth's mother, Marvel Sunderland, is with them. Beatrice and John Zak are vacationing at Brevort Lake. Happy birthday to Tracy Movalson July 7. Last weekend Dave and I journeyed to Howell to visit Eric, Kelli, Amanda, and Zach Movalson and the pets. While there, we went to the Howell Balloon Fest, watched Zach play tee ball, and Amanda play coached-pitched softball. We brought Zach home with us, his first time away from Mom, Dad, and sister. As usual, the kids are always on their best behavior with Grandpa and Grandma. It was a pleasure. Eric, Kelli, and Amanda arrived the next evening to spend three weeks at the cottage on the beach. Enjoy the Fourth of July. |
