Artist of the Week Series Begins Wed.
Free Demonstrations at Cedarville Museum

Les Cheneaux Historical Association will start its summer Artist of the Week series Wednesday, July 11, with fiber artist Roxanne Eberts. Artist of the Week will be presented at the Les Cheneaux Historical Museum on Meridian Street from noon to 3 p.m.

Mrs. Eberts is a Hessel resident who operates Woolderness Fiber Loft in Hessel with fellow fiber artist Pat Wilson of Hessel.

She started spinning nearly 10 years ago, learning from an Ann Arbor artist who established The Spinner's Flock, a spinning guild in Chelsea. Mrs. Eberts became a member of the group before she moved the Upper Peninsula.

She is now a member of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Country Weavers and Spinners organization. Besides spinning, she has learned to process a wool fleece to prepare it for spinning. She has learned dying techniques and taught herself to knit and make felt.

Artist of the Week will continue through August 22. Sessions are free and open to the public, and will be offered every Wednesday.

The next featured artist July 18 will be Kate Windsor Otstot of Hessel, who plans to demonstrate glass "lampwork" bead making. Mrs. Otstot has a studio in her home.

She is an award-winning artist who started developing her skills in Cedarville High School before serving in the United States Air Force. She lived in Pennsylvania for several years before moving to the Upper Peninsula with her husband, Jack.

Upcoming artists include basket weavers Elda Nye and Jeri Griffin, wood carver Jim Berryhill, American Indian traditional artist Anny Hubbard, silver jewelry maker Lori Johnson, and oil painter Marianne Milkowski.

Demonstrations will be outside unless inclement weather forces the event inside the museum.
