Land Purchase To Protect Habitat

The Michigan Nature Association plans to purchase the 31-acre Lennagene Rossman Stratton Memorial Nature Sanctuary off M-123 southeast of Moran, to preserve its natural habitat.

The land offers habitat for the only federally endangered dragonfly in the country, the Hine's emerald dragonfly. Cool waters, limestone, and tufa rock at the site contribute to ideal habitat for the insect; its habitat is endangered across the Midwest because of its typical proximity to prime lakeshore development properties, the association reports.

The nonprofit association is raising funds to acquire the land as part of its Statewide Land Protection Campaign and is seeking community donations to meet its land protection goals. For more information about the Statewide Land Protection Campaign, call (517) 655-5655.
