Open House Honors Shaws 70th Anniversary

Captain Glen and Joan Shaw
DeTour area residents and friends and family will honor the 70th wedding anniversary of Captain Glen Shaw and Joan Shaw at an open house at the village hall Sunday, July 15. Light refreshments will be served and local musicians will perform.

Captain and Mrs. Shaw have been married for 70 years as of March 13. Both were born and grew up in DeTour and have lived there all of their lives. Captain Shaw turned 90 April 27, and Mrs. Shaw turned 88 May 3.

The couple has been active in the community. The care of their three sons, Robert, Roger, and Randy, often fell to Mrs. Shaw, as Captain Shaw sailed the lakes as a tugboat captain for much of the year. Mrs. Shaw has always been active in Sacred Heart Church, taking over organizational roles in Sacred Heart's Alter Society such as fundraising, funeral dinners, bake sales, and the fourth of July rummage sale. She is active in the Quilters, an accomplished cook, baker, and gardener, and spent nine years running a resort on Caribou Lake.

Captain Shaw sailed all of his life on the Great Lakes. He captained the tug, 50 ears ago, that put the last span of roadway in place on the Mackinac Bridge connecting Michigan's two peninsulas. Upon his retirement, he wrote, "Boats, Great Lakes, and Me," and has been a popular speaker at DeTour Library for Friends of the Library author presentations. He crafts wooden foot stools, bird houses, and yard ornaments, and enjoys working with Mrs. Shaw in their kitchen and garden
